Polishing Problems

So this weekend I got busy with all of the new stuff I just bought. After I got the right combo going (Meg. 105 w/ LC yellow on the PC) I went to town. The car was coming out great until I got to my rear bumper (98 Ford Cobra). When I started to polish it there was a haze over the area. It looked like I had left wax on it, but it will not wipe off. So I started to think that maybe my clear had failed ( the car has not been waxed/polished in a few years). So I rubbed it with my finger with a lot of pressure and it will rub off, almost like dead skin. Then you can see a shine again.
So next thought is maybe I was too aggressive with it. I tried the LC orange with the 105, same thing. Now I am not sure what to do. I have pics, I just forgot the camera at home today.
Anyone have any ideas?

Flexible urethane components get paint with flex agent added to the paint, actually some components of new cars are manufactured and painted off-site of the assembly line and then shipped to the assembly plant where they are assembled to the car so the painting process and possibly the paint can be and/or will be different than how the car body was painted.

Did you try polishing with your second step polish to a test section to see if it resolved the issue?

Also, sometimes when you run into problems with a panel/paint system, try just a simple cleaner/wax and see how that works, sometimes a simple product can save the day...

:)

No I did not try the second step. I will give both of your suggestions a shot either tonight or tomorrow and report back.
Thank you for your help.

I have ran into this problem a few times with different cars and different panels. My solution has been using my 2nd step (i.e. if I used 105 I'll follow up with 205).

105 with the yellow pad is pretty aggressive.. any time I use the yellow pad I immediately follow up with the 2nd polish because it will leave a haze in the clear.

Mike, I will have to try the cleaner wax idea! Too simple and easy not to.

Mike, you are the MAN!!! I was able to go play with it for a minute today. I switched to the 205 and a orange pad and everything polished up. Now that I know what needs to be done I will be back at it this weekend and will hopefully be able to finish it up. Thanks again.

I have seen this as well. It will usually wipe right off with mineral spirits, with little to no pressure.

Ok, so I thought all was good. I was able to get great results yesterday using M205 w/ a LC orange pad. Then today when I went back to go over the car with 85rd and a LC white pad the problem came back. So I tried going over it using every speed on the PC, by hand with a micro fiber app, and with a foam app. So I figured I would just go back over it with the M205/orange pad. Well now that is not working. I think tomorrow I will try to pick up some cleaner wax and try that along with the mineral spirits.

I had something today that sounds similar. I just thought the compound (M105) was flashing quickly and leaving a hard shell. 85RD did the same thing, but M205 didnt. It just didnt want to wipe off. My solution was to clean the pads more often, and if I had a little trouble wiping the compound off, I would spray a small sprits of water on the area and ran the PC over the area quickly again.......then easily wipe it off.

would could be having completely different problems happening, i dont know. Mine was happening on a 2003 Xterra with single stage white paint that was highly oxidized.

Hello, Stewart. Maybe you could try 85rd on black instead. But before you do, try an ipa wipedown first then your 205 on white, then the 85rd as mentioned.

Were you dry buffing? 105 dries faster than 205 in my experience. But i use a spray of water as suggested to use as a lubricant after 2passes on my initial application. This could have caused it.

Not sure just a hunch, how oxidized was highly oxidized? Although it is SMAT technology, it doesn't really cut the same when your pad is caked with paint and the compound. Sometimes paint reacts differently to other products, that could be it. :)

I think I was dry buffing at the beginning. after a 1/4 of the vehicle, I started spraying the pad off with the hose and spin drying it on my old rotary every panel.

this was the oxidation. not a great picture, but you get the idea by how shiny the paint was under the hood bra

Nice work removing the oxidation, i can clearly see the area you have worked on. Have you tried using a less aggressive product? Although 105 would indeed be faster in removing the oxidation, might as well give 205 a shot, it might save you time by skipping a step (105).

I used 205 with a white pad on the sides of the vehicle, followed bt 85rd. The hood and top got 105 first, then 205 and 85rd

Yeah, mine is doing the same thing. I did notice after I finished last night that if I took the fresh cleaned pad and wiped on it softly that it would remove some hardend residue.
