hi guys, newbie here.... i just purchased a porter cable 7424 unit and i was wondering if it suppose to make metal to metal, screeching type noise as it runs? sounds like something is wrong but im thinking im hearing the counterweight or something. ive heard rotary units before and they sound really smooth, does a DA orbital suppose to sound like this?

thanks
Steve

It is a little noisy, sounds like something is loose in the unit, but this is normal. Check and make sure nothing is loose or rubbing on the counter weight.

Make sure your using the spacer washer when you attach your velcro pad to avoid metal to metal contact.

Iam new using it too, I use ear plugs because off the noise is annoying after a while using it :buffing:

Without the washer, the wrench won't fit in between the backing plate and the machine.

remember the washer ...its usually the culprit .

I have two PCs that are quite old, one over ten years the other about seven. Neither of these units came with the washer you speak of and I can't saythere has been any problem getting the wrench behind the BP. Was the use of a washer something relatively new?

I have no washer on mine either and it works fine.
:whs:

I have no idea what this washer is that people are referring to. I have no washer and my PC (until I traded it in for a Flex) worked fine without it and I had no problem getting the wrench in there to change the backing plate.
