Ok, let me start by saying hi to everyone.

I bought my 7424xp back in DEC 09. The machine was running really well for the first two months I'd used it. Around the Feb. time frame my XP seemed to bog under any type of pressure I applied to it. Even under setting six it stopped spinning. Needless to say that I sent it for repair, but the same problem persisted after repair. I contacted Porter Cable again about the issue and they gave me a complete new one.

Now, I have a new XP, and my XP does not spin while it is on setting 1-4. Just the weight of the machine alone bogs it down. Settings 5-6 the machine behaves the way it should. I think. At first I thought I was using too long of an extension cord, so I connected it straight to the wall and I'm still have the same problem. I would like to know if it is user error or what? I bought a Flex while the XP was in repair and I have no problems there. The Flex is amazing, however, I still want my XP to work properly.

Thanks in advance.

Send it back as I have one and it works flawlessly .You just seemed to have been unlucky to get 2 bad units

That is what I was thinking, but I also thought the chance of having to bad units was very rare.

anything under sp5 with 6.5' pads and my pc slows or stops.just thought it was normal, now i'm wondering. with 5.5' pads it's not as bad.

What???? What washer? Where am I? Who are you? Who am I?

Seriously I did know either can someone share photos?

It comes with a washer that goes on the backing plate.

Is this the washer?? Thank you DuBBin1!!!! Almost became trash cause I had no clue and I dont remember reading about it in the instructions... Then again I have problems reading instructions... So said my wife.

You guys are great, thanks. Gotta go home and check my box!

Mike, can this be a sticky for the XP post section. I reviewed the instructions and if it wasnt for surfing this post I would have never known. I wonder if this could cause the backing plate to break off since this washer adds another 1/4 inch clearance and under pressure it could cause rubbing against the screws in housing. This could be a safety issue.

There is one reference in the instructions under "Changing the backup Pad" under 1. C. it states "A spacer is supplied with the 7346SP and 7424XP to allow the backup pad to clear the eccentic plate screws (F Fig5) Mount the spacer on the shaft before attaching the back up pad."

Sorry to hear but in your own quest for help you also helped others. I was unaware of the washer as you and it is possible there are others in our community that are also unaware so your post may have help others. One question I do have and maybe it will help have you tried two of the tricks I learned here on the forum?

#1 With Permante marker draw a line on the yellow backing plate straight up and down. If it does not move when you are using the DA then the pad isnt turning. You are applying too much pressure.

#2 on a bathroom scale place the DA on the scale. (DO NOT RUN THE DA WHILE YOU DO THIS) the reason is so you can get a feel for what 15-20 pounds of total pressure feels like. Remember this is if you are running the DA above 4. Anything below that you need to ease up on the DA. If you regularly lean on the DA too hard at a lower power setting it will not turn and bog down. If you are running less than 4 the weight of the machine should be enough.

Hope this helps in some fashion. I learned this all on this forum.

#1 I agree. Good advice. The mark will help you tell how fast it is spinning if at all.

#2 He said even the weight of the machine bogs it down. Doesnt sound right to me. I have the old style 7424. Ran 6.5 in pads on it for years. It does not have the power of my Griots, but, it could still spin the pads. The XP is supposed to be significantly more powerful.

Thanks Torino. I have learned all that you suggested on the forum as well. I have spent hours reading on autogeek, great info all around here. I was just wondering if there was anything I was doing wrong. I do not believe the weight of the machine should not bog it down to basically a complete stop. I also have a Flex and it runs flawless. I want to get all my facts straight before I take it back to the Porter Cable service center.

This will sound strange but if there is no pressure or rather hardly any pressure against the foam pad none of the DA Polishers will rotate the pad, in fact they will just flutter and sometimes just spin backwards.

Put the speed setting on at least 5.0, put some product, (liquid/lubricant), on the face of the pad, place the face of the pad against some paint and then turn the polisher on and push on it about 10 to 15 pounds and you'll see the pad rotate.

Lift up and just let the pad rest against the paint and it will more or less do nothing. I can't explain it I've just played with all the tools enough to have noticed this phenomena. I'm confident it has something to do with the Free Floating Spindle Assembly.

I used the XP all day long and all night long and it performed flawlessly. These are high quality tools, getting one that's bad is truly an exception.

You may want to replace all of your DA's then ;) Really though my PC spins like crazy with no pressure/little pressure and yes, it spins forwards not backwards.

Thanks Mike, you never fail us.
