Portercable: if the pad isn't rotating am I pressing too hard?

I wouldn't consider going to a more powerful machine until you have ALOT of experience. The fact that your pad stopped rotating is precisely why the PC is the perfect machine for you right now. It's specifically designed to stop rotating if you are pressing too hard. It does this as basically a safety feature so you don't burn your paint. If you had been using a machine with forced rotation, you could have potentially done some real damage.
Absolutely! For now, you have plenty of recommendations on keeping that pad spinning. Keep it level, watch your pressure, mark the pad so you can see the rotation, keep the pad clean, etc..... You'll find the PC will force you to fine tune your pads and polishes to get results. When you feel comfortable and get your technique down make the move....you'll love your next machine.

One thing I would check is take the backing plate off and see if it looks like the rivets on the back of BP are rubbing on the 7424. For someone new to using a 7424 I doubt you are pressing to hard as you are trying to be careful. I'm thinking you might be missing a washer between the BP and 7424 causing the BP to rub and the pad to stop rotating. Its easy to check and have seen this problem many times.

Hi, I'm a newbie I got the porter cable today with Wolfgang 3.0 swirl remover and glaze.

Although the Wolfgang Finishing Glaze uses the word "glaze" in the name, it's not a true glaze it's a Fine Cut Polish.

A true glaze is non-abrasive. There's no laws or regulations telling companies what to use for words to describe their products so here's how I determine what a product is,

Base what a product is by what it does, not the name on the label.

That's in my how-to book under the chapter on compounds and polishes.

Just have one question, when I would see that the pad was not rotating I would let off pressure, in order to allow it to rotate.

Is it a good rule of thumb to let off of the pressure if it does not rotate? Or am I doing it wrong?

This would only be a problem when I would be In speed 3-4 (applying glaze) not 5-6 (swirl remover).

This is going to sound weird, but if you don't apply any pressure at all when using any of the common DA polishers, just kind of the weight of the machine or less, the pad won't rotate at all. In fact it will even rotate backwards.

Then BOOM! You apply some pressure and it's amazing, it starts working as normal.

Test yourself and see.

When using the Porter Cable brand of DA Polisher, turn you speed up to the 6 setting for all your defect removal steps. It will rotate small, thin pads on the 5 setting but best results come when you just go all out.

But in order to get the pad to rotate you must apply downward pressure to these types of tool. No pressure = poor rotation.

:)

Thanks a lot guys! And again thanks mike your all over the forum, it's a huge benefit to have an expert actively answering all questions. I know you must be busy. Thanks!

Yes I double checked the washer is there.

Quick update:I finally saw the hood of my car in the sun. It's a huge improvement , I saw very few swirl marks on the side I worked on. I know i can get rid of them with more practice but I'm very happy for it being my first time. I will post pics that I have on my phone as soon as I learn how to.

Love reading success stories on our forum.

Keep in mind we all started out as Newbies and we all had our first time detailing a car. So you're in good company.

:xyxthumbs:

Thanks , on sunday ill be Able to finish the car completely.

What size pads are you using? I know the kit I bought had the 6.5 and I had the hardest time keeping them spinning on some of the panels. So I went down a size and use 5.5 in pads. Wayyyyy better.

You can still see a few swirls on the after pic but a huge improvement. Also on the after pic you can see the area I have not worked on top right .
