Possible side-effects?

I use SOnax wheel xleaner prior to washing my car, let it sit for 3 minutes, then simply rinse off.I just recently noticed this surface rust on my lug nuts of the wheels and bolts on my calipers. By the way this is Myles from the July detailing class. Pics below:

Looks like it just helped speed up the oxidation of some exposed steel to me

Not sure about the Sonax, but what were you using on the wheels before?

Had same side effect with IronX...lug nuts turned black and then rusted.

Welcome to the forum Myles,

As far as the lugs and caliper bolts you have a BMW and those are just a coated steel the coating tends to break down and when you use a product like Sonax on them (not that it is bad by any means) the coating will show where the weak links are (by the rust coming out)...

On my Z3 I have taken the wheels off and wire wheeled the studs then painted them black again with some wheel paint... No more rust...
