I bet that drive is amazing in the fall.

We don't really have any fun roads down here.

This is my favorite drive!

Sorry, the picture sucks!!!

I highlighted the road in black. In terms of good corners and actual driving, it's lacking. But, there really isn't anything that's good driving that I know of. But, as far as just getting out and driving a section of road, it doesn't get old. It's called the Murphy 125, as you can tell from the town name. Just something to lap on a nice day, with the windows down and the stereo up. And the nice part is, you can adjust it easily for how much you wanna drive.

Didn't take this picture. But it's a portion of road on Route 97 along the Delaware River. The whole road is very scenic and has some nice twisties on it if you are a spirited driver. Only problem is that it's highly traveled by families and of course they never go as fast as you want. Still an awesome road though!!

This is Hawks Nest isn't it??

I have two favorites. First is the Kangamangus Highway in Northern New Hampshire. Exceptional road for a car that can handle the twisty's. The scenery in the fall is magnificent. The moose are a hazzard though.

Second all time favorite is of course the Autobahn. Not much more to say. It's the Autobahn and its awesome.

Autobahn is on my list of roads to drive, one day I will

Taking some notes on these as my new favorite activity it taking road trips to scenic drives on the East Coast. The route 97 drive looks awesome! I'm hopefully going this weekend to Skyline drive in the Shenandoah Valley in VA. Will have pics upon my return

Thortons Gap near Sperryville Va is my favorite road. I drive it a couple times a month in my Vette to get some heat into the tires ;)

No pics but the Meritt Parkway in CT. I have also driven in many foreign countries, but the scariest ride was handling the switchbacks on the Italian roads from Naples to Positano.

+3 on the Dragon

Edit: will be trying to drive the cherohala skyway, heard it is great.

I've been going to the Dragon/Cherahola Skyway since 2003 and it is a must drive road, no doubt about it! We go the 2nd weekend in Oct and for the past 2 years I've run the road at night with a much faster car infront of me so I can keep my foot down most of the way and not have to worry about seeing what's next, I just follow his LED tails and headlights. Now when I say this I'm not trying to brag but having gone out there many times, I still drive within my limits and having a CR-Z, well, those limits aren't very high, LOL.

The Cherahola Skyway is a road that leads right into the Dragon when coming from where it begins which is Tellico Plains Tennessee and is route 165. The Skyway is 57 miles long and turns into route 143 when you cross into North Carolina, its at that time where the elevation is up near 4-5k, one stop off is a tad higher than a mile in elevation, God's country out there and I will drive these roads once a year till I die, I'm hardcore about this trip every year:dblthumb2:

Found this on Google, the highest point on the Skyway....then as you head towards the Dragon you see signs that say "9% grade for the next 1.5 miles"

The above pics are from the Cherahola Skway, here's the Dragon.......

At the intersection of route 129 and 28 is this place, where all the fun begins, or ends, depending upon which direction your coming from:

One old movie was filmed on part of the Dragon, "Two Lane Blacktop" which came out in 1971 as well as the "The Fugative" but its just the Dam that Harrison Ford jumps off of, so not exactly the Dragon but kinda.

The Dragon has claimed the lives of about 2 dozen people since 2000, its no joke going out there, fun road to drive but you've gotta watch yourself. There's 318 turns in 11 miles and its non stop w/o any turn arounds or side roads, once you begin its on! The Skyway has large sweepers and you've really gotta watch your momentum out there, too much speed and that's it, not trying to scare anyone off but rather inform you if you decide to go out which I HIGHLY suggest you do. You don't need a sports car to enjoy the road, my current car is a Honda CR-Z and it did great and my previous car was a Honda Fit sport w/ automatic w/ paddle shifters, handled the road just fine. One thing for sure is the fact that your car needs to be in tip top shape if you decide to "have a little fun", its in yours and everyone elses best interest.

All the turns on the Dragon are cambered, you just lean into them and the car sticks, just stay off the double yellow line, its a public road with lots of bikes, even the smallest car looks huge to them, so PLEASE, stay away from the double yellow. Klasse Act you are really making me want to run up there and drive that road. I may have to take some time off and run up there. When in Oct do you go?

Unfortunately here in south florida there are no roads that even have any sort of curves to them and my BMW is starting to beg for a challenging road. Plus my inner race car driver is wanting to come out in the worst way and just got some new treads on the back end that need a good break in.

Here is a great map of the road for you all (and me to drool on) that I found.

Yancy, we're going the 2nd weekend in Oct, the 11th thru the 13th is the "official" dates for our run but we've got a couple guys coming in a day early, 2 of them are from Florida infact, one has an S2000 and the other guy has a modded Mazda RX-8, both are vets of our run too. There's also a guy who's coming up from FLA to a wedding in the greater Chicagoland area who's driving down with us on his way home too, so you'd have company on the way up and on the way down. Although our place is booked up the owner is letting us have people crash on the floor for $10.00 a night, just bring an air mattress or you could stay in Tellico Plains where we used to stay Caney Creek Village in Tellico Plains, Tennessee That place is only 3.5 miles from the beginning of the Skyway and we've been staying there for many years, this year we changed locations due to the fact that people wanted to stay right on the Dragon itself, well its actually about 10 miles away from the action but still on route 129, its called the Dragon Pit Inn and they are booked up that weekend, didn't take long and we even had to scramble to get a place to stay, next year we'll be booking super early. So you would have some place to stay no matter what and if you and your wife/girlfriend want to stay somewhere alone and away from the group, Caney Creek is an option for you, if you call there, tell the owner, Dixie that "Roger from Deeeetroit" sent you, she knows me very well.

Everyone else, the Skyway/Dragon loop is about 140 miles round trip and its quite a drive and really something to see and do for sure. Now as far as money goes, well, I took about $525 with me last year and came back with about $50 bucks, it all depends on your car and its thirst and how much you spend on stuff like souveniers and food, its up to you. I wish I had threw this out there to the group earlier but next year I will make a thread for it and invite the entire AG community out for our 11th annual run next year, its the most fun you can have on 4 wheels, well 3 if your having too much fun, LOL!

Here's a pic that sums it up for you:
img1318777941775.jpg

The above sign is right outside of Robinsville N.C. and let's you know about the fun that awaits you, but the 15-20 mph turns, well, that may be true but there's so many hairpin turns that your not entering them at 20 mph, that's for sure. The rule out there is this "EASY IN, HARD OUT"....within reason that is.

I've got our thread going over on another forum if you'd like to come by and check it out if you'd like. Not all the conversation is Dragon all the time but you get feel for the group, we've got all ages and backgrounds and cars making this trip, noobs to our run are a plenty this year, the most ever infact, so no worries about not knowing anyone, we're all car guys:Picture:

Dont have pics, but The Dragon is great when there isnt any other traffic, Have to go mid-week mid-day to do it! My favorite unknown road is Highway 215 from Rosman to Canton, NC going under the Blue Ridge Parkway which is the last of my top 3.

I couldn't find any good pictures, but its a "hill climb" to my grandparents house in Toa Alta, Puerto Rico. It's actually the highest house on the mountain. Most of it is on paved road, although there are sections of dirt only roads. It can get scary because it's a TIGHT two lane road, and the locals aren't afraid of making it 2.5 lanes. Good memories I have on that road.
