Post your MicroFibers

I'm not totally against using cheap (it's all relative) towels. I tried these blue and tan (iirc) ones from Advance Auto that I liked for removing wax. Just like foam pads it's a good idea to do a test spot. The rolled edges are kinda important in my mind. My mind is a scary place to be sometimes though. lol

I usually do the CD test. I get a mint condition CD, usually a blank and I really put down some pressure and rub vigorously on it to see if it induces any type of scratching or marring. Of course one would take it easy on paint (i hope).

Yep, the CD test works great!
 
You may be able to get away with Costco towels for some things. But like having the right tool for the right job - its always nice to have a towel good at the task at hand. I haven't seen any 600 gsms, waffle weaves, or glass towels at Costco.

However, those yellow "Detailer" towels the sell make a pretty good general purpose towel.

But at some point, you may want to grab some towels with more nap, as that may actually help prevent dirt from scratching if its already on the surface.

Plus, its just more enjoyable to work with nice towels.

Makes me feel bad using Costco towels on my paint. I made a big purchase of towels on CG. Spending over $100 on towels. Couldn't believe I spent that much on towels but after seeing this thread I don't feel so bad. I'm probably going to pick up some more towels now :)

Any suggestions for towels to use to wash my car the Garry Dean method for under $5/each?

2 suggestions:

1. MicroFiber Tech's 6xx gsm

2. Eurow Shag 660 gsm

.... Or Chinchillas on BOGO.

Or you can get 2 CG Sasquatch towels for < $10.

If you take care of your towels, they will outlast almost anything in a bottle or a tub you will buy detailing wise.

For me, the Cobras are too "heavy" or "dense" (for lack of a better description). Although they are soft, - towels with a longer nap work better for me, the Cobras just don't want to stay folded when they are soaked for some reason - just my experience.

Did your Costco towels cause scratches or marring?
 
I use costco towels for cleaning tires and wheels. Sams club has some cheap mf towels that look a little bit thicker than the costco ones. Might be ok for glass, but still not good enough for paint imho.

I'm not really sure. I haven't polished all my swirls away since I've bought my car 6 months ago. I'm waiting for the summer to get it done.

Im going to do a side bu side review now that you got me interested. I never noticed cheap MF towels actually scratch my paint. The only notable differance was that they tend to lint alot when they get old. As a matter of fact, my t-shirt marred my paint so easy when I rubbed one of my fender panels on purpose to test just how soft my paint really was (05 Honda). Never with cheap MF's however, and that might be my own experience only. Expect a review soon gentlemen :)

Sure you've not been sneakin' in my garage? :laughing:
I have the wife pick up a pack at Costco about every spring/summer season at least. As they fade I mark them and relagate them to different duties. First step down is "I" interior, as they get worse "II" wheels, rocker panels, clean engine area. Worse ones go to exhaust duties, greasy areas. They tend to do pretty good.

OTOH its easy to get spoiled by BOGO sales here on AG for sure!

Oh, and the bag-o-rags at Advance Auto Parts I noticed last night has different mixes. One I wouldn't get for nothing, but the other had a lot of glass, tight slick weave type in it. Sorta' a grab bag for sure as it's different every time I look. :dunno:
 
I have Sasquatch mf's from CG, chinchillas from AG, cobra 530,600's.. Can they be used for both buffing and washing if I'm doing the GDM. I mean so you have to use the super soft fancy ones for just buffing? Can I use them for washing too if I run out of the others? Are certain ones designated for certain things?

You mean the ones that are short cross weave on one side and plush on the other, right? Oh yeah, and @ 20% off $4.99 making them $3.99 a pair (with online ordering and a 3 mile drive to go get them) I've managed to like them as well. :) Not near as 'grabby' as say the 530's when removing polish/wax. Don't know how well they'll hold up in the long run but heck at $2.00 a whack it's a no brainer.

Got some new towels from Chemical Guys today.

First up, these are called "Chubby Fat Microfibers". They are 16x16". The seem about 360 gsm. They are very nice and soft. I got a pack of 6. On the AG scale, I would compare them to Cobra Gold Jrs, just a little thicker and fluffier.

Next up are CG's "Extremely Thick Heavy Weigh Microfiber 530+ gsm". I got a 3 pack of these. They are somewhat similar to the previous towels, but have a black microfiber border, and they are thicker and fluffier.

These also have a fluffy side and a denser side:

These towels remind me quite a bit of the Cobra 530 gsm towels. The CG are also 530 gsm. You would almost think they were the same towel in different colors, except the Cobras seem like they may be a hair more "substantial". But, this is really splitting hairs.

Also, like the Cobra 530s these have a dense side and a fluffy side. Interestingly enough, the Cobra's "difference" between dense and fluffy is a bit more extreme. The Cobras fluffy side is fluffier than the Chemical Guy's, but the CG's dense side is fluffier than the Cobra's dense side - basically the differences are more extreme with the Cobra 530s.

I took some pictures comparing the two. The Cobras (from AG) are the grey ones for those not aware.

Honestly, I needed more towels like a hole in the head. But, CG was having quite a nice sale. I'd hate to tell you how cheap I got these towels for.

And as I sit here my wife was peeking over saying "what is that?". Speaking of the photos of freakin' towels. :laughing: To which she quickly reminded me that we are NOT made of money! :p

Just a thought.... has anyone seriously thought of ordering a lot of say 1000, 3000, 6000 from Alibaba? Sure that's a lot of money but with a final cost for say 500~600 gsm towels at around a buck each it makes ya' think. Were I a professional with a crew of 3 ~ 4 employees I'd surely consider that an investment worth making.

For that matter if I were still running my towing business we were about nutty enough to get together with several other guys and pull a stunt like that. :o Never can have too many tax write-offs ya' know. ;)
 
I am a microfiber junkie. I think I have around 200 MF towels now. Most are for rinsless and waterless washing becuase I wash my cars alot. I have 15 mf for wax only and MF bonnets for the PC I have dash board mf, exterior window mf, inside window mf, wheels tires mf, AP mf and big mf for drying. I found at CG you can get good quality mf 12 of them for around 20 bucks cant be beat. I love there super towel 16 X 16 gold towel 12 mf for 19 bucks thats cheap but they last I use them every week and they still look great a year later. I love this thread guys keep the pics going.

Anyone here tried the eurow 300/350/660 gsm microfiber towels? I have been debating placing an order off to see how I like them.
