Post Your Most Uneducated Comments Ever Received In Detailing History

I had a guy who said to me that even he was never that anal about his car and that I'm 10x more anal retentive about my car than him but that his car still looks good. He also told me that nufinish will do a much better job and be much cheaper than whatever I used on my car which was Cquartz UK. I asked him if all the swirls were an example of how well he takes care of his car and if the oxidation was an example of how well the nufinish was working for him and he left it alone from there.

I don't need the buffing and stuff, I just want it detailed.

I've heard the ol "I used to use Pledge on my cars in the 70's" about a hundred times.

Car paint is one of the subjects that everyone is a an expert on and gets tons of unsolicited opinions.

"Paint is a wear part, like brakes pads. Why prolong the inevitable failure?"

A coworker with a doctorate degree in engineering said that about his G37.

Amazes me as to why most people feel the need to open their mouths and make total asses out of themselves.

I commented earlier in this thread on detailing, but this reminds me of something that happened to my wife yesterday.

We recuse American Pit Bull Terriers. My wife works at our local vet, and has trained dogs her whole life. She is very good with large/powerful breeds. Good enough that she gets phone calls day & night for advice.

Anyway, long story short, upon her walking two of our four dogs yesterday, a man came up and offered to show her the "real way" to walk a powerful dog. He said that her having the leashes attached to the collars at the neck was no good. You need to attach the leashes to a harness on their back as he had done with all his dogs. When asked why he thought this was the best way by my wife, he replied that "It worked VERY well for his Black Lab & Cocker Spanial."

My wife thanked him for his time, walked on and shook her head.

Apologize for straying off-topic.

Get things like you dont need to do that, dish soap strips wax or wax fixes literally everything

I offered to detail my father-in-law's Acura for no charge. Never heard back and when I asked him about it he said " The guy at the carwash told me you're not supposed to wax the paint on cars these days" From that day on I never brought it up again since I'm sure the "guy at the carwash" was an auto paint system expert ! :-)

The most common thing I've encountered is attributing any and all shine to a paint to the wax. Like all they have to do is add more layers of wax instead of worrying about what is under it.
My clear is pealing....add more wax!

I equate this to the guys that come up to a car with an aftermarket cam, headers, stroker, etc. and asks what muffler is on it because they want their car to sound like it. Sorry sir, your 6 cyl will never sound like this, or your stock V8 will require much more than a muffler to sound like this.

LMAO!!

Yeah, this 550 hp sound is all muffler, baby!!

Once while I was in Target buying a bottle of Meg's Ultimate Spray Wax - minding my own business - the guy next to me explained how good old carnauba wax was better then that fake stuff. According to him over time carnauba builds up a "permanent layer" on the car so you don't have to wax it anymore. If this wasn't enough, he went on to tell me he used to be a detailer in Hawaii - so you know, he has credibility on the matter. Who knew!

I just smiled, muttered something like "how about that", and walked away.

Was he about 7 feet tall?

From a 'family member': "You will void the factory warranty by polishing and waxing. That's why they use that clear coat stuff. The salesman told me."

Bill

One of the more recently amusing anecdotes was someone musing how coatings are just snake oil and do not work. Also that sealants also do not work - only carnauba wax will work to protect a car's finish. It was something like that.

He also said that foam pads do not cut paint under any circumstances.... He structured his opinions with embellishments that in a way that both reinforced the perception of his expertise, and guarded them from scrutiny.

These statements in and of them self are not all that much of a problem. The problem was that he provided no evidence to the claims when asked, and beligerently defend his claims when contrary evidence was presented.

That was an odd experience.

I don't know if this is the right spot, something I have been wanting to share. Last summer I had the owner of pretty much the only detail shop in town come into my work. Since I had him there, I mentioned I noticed his truck, lettered with his business. I quickly mentioned coating, and ask if he did them, his reply " Oh yea", I asked which he used, his reply " Theres about 80 different one out there, they are all just a gimmick, wax last longer". I just thanked him for the info and that was it.

About a month ago a thread here was talking about pricing, I took an interest and looked around my area, which I really only found the one shop. I called them, told him I wanted to get my ride shined up this spring. He told me a wash, decon, and wax was $89 to add interior was a total of $115. But then he said there is a new thing called a ceramic coating that just came out on the market 6 months ago, and guaranteed to last five year! Plus the coating price was $379. What a deal.

One of the guys at the dealership's body shop told me that I should never wash the car with any type of soap, just with water with some drops of alcohol and a mop head. Can you believe that? To this day I still think if he was trolling me or he was being serious.

SLIGHTLY off-topic:

Co-worker was arguing with me about my displeasure with all the winter salt and brine the township puts on the roads.
He said, "I don't know why you are so upset- it's not like they would put anything on the roads that was bad for cars....."

Now THAT is downright scary!

If dawn is safe enough for a baby duck then it is safe for my paint.

I recently detailed this woman's car and when I was done she told me "wow I didn't know it could shine like that!"
