Hello all I have yet again come to everyone on here to save the day :) For over a year now I have people stop and ask me who details my cars and once I tell them I do they want to know if I do it as a business. I do no I am just your weekend enthusiast but I am thinking that maybe just for the summer to make some extra cash since I am going to be off work I could give it a try see where it goes. Who knows I enjoy it so much may be I will do it full time there are not but two in my area and they SUCK!

What would be some good starting out prices?

$10 wash
$20 wash and wax
$100 full detail

just charge by the hour. If you're only doing this for summer, then don't take making money so serious. Have fun and make a couple bucks

My advice would be to do a full exterior on the cheap. When you're finished, stand back, look at it, feel how sore you are, get paid and ask yourself if what is in your hand was worth it. Raise price accordingly. My prices are no longer the lowest, but my customers keep coming back.

I think that's the idea I'll go for I think I'm reading to much into it it's something I love to do so I'll enjoy it and make a few bucks just see where it goes from there! :)

That is really a loaded question. It greatly depends on:

What you are doing
How you are doing it
What level you are going it at
What your current market is

Offer "introductory" prices, then see if you have any resistance. Every business should have around 20% price resistance, that will set what your market is willing to bear for that particular service.

I'm thinking I am mainly going to focus on exterior first then interior I will do basic interior cleaning but specialize in exterior.

services I am going to offer:

Hand wash and dry which includes fender well scrub and door jam cleaning
$35.00?
I will be using the griots orbital and cyclo orbital for polishing and waxing
basic wax which I will use something more for durability than shine haven't decided on what was I will use yet I am a big fan of meguiars mirror glaze products. So I might try to use something from their line up or possibly a one step sealant
$60:00?
For those wanting swirl removal $75.00 which includes collinite 845 sealant

am I in the right ball park with that?

I use collinite sealant and marque elegance
meguriars 205,83 and 105
griots car wash and best of show wax

that's all on my personal vehicles do I want to use that on customers also?

Your prices should reflect your skill level. As your skills increase and you turn out a more valuable product you can adjust your prices. Your target audience will also dictate what you can charge and still attract customers. Just do your best and be as honest with yourself as you are with your customers.

what are you looking to get out of it?
what products are you using?
how much do you want to make?
Do you have the equipment and products to get the job done?

All questions you need to ask yourself if you want to do this.

I do the same.

I believe I have the tools to do great exterior and engine bay cleaning but as far as interior goes I'm pretty bare bones I get it really clean but I know I need to seriously improve so my interior detail as starting off will be very cheap since I am so novice at it.
I'm not going to lie whenever I run into a issue and can't seem to find a resolution from Mike's books I turn to this forum.Everyone is so helpful!!!!

You're completely over thinking this

Just post on your facebook page and charge friends/family $100 for an AIO or something

There's no need to buy more equipement/products or make a price list, etc.. Start with your friends and family, ask for referrals on each person. Charge $25 for a wash and vac, $50 for a wash and wax with vac, $100 for full interior, etc... You will have a lot more fun, make more money, and get more people like that

Don't talk about what sealant will go with what package, etc...

This^^^

Since its for friends and family there isnt much of a need to get all kinds of products and equipment that you dont already have. Now say one of your friends had a convertible and the top is dull. Thats when you buy the convertible top cleaner stuff and id make them pay for it. Tell them this "you buy the product and ill do it for X amount". See what im saying. To have all the equipment and all the products to do every job will cost thousands. Just offer them 1 package that covers everything basically and charge what you think its worth or on a sliding scale. For instance i wouldnt charge my grandma (if i charged her at all) the same amount as id charge my friends co workers brother. Just have fun with it. :xyxthumbs:

I totally agree with you on over thinking it. It's a bad habit of mine for sure right along with perfectionism. But what you said makes sense and it's what I'm going to do I'm just going to keep it simple.

Just have fun in the beginning :xyxthumbs:

Now, if things pick up, the cars you work on get a bit more pricey week by week, etc... then look into upgrading everything

For now, have fun :props:
