Problem with credit card company, what would you do?

IMO, if you want/need to use a CC and can do so intelligently, go with one of the major cards from AMEX, VISA or MC. I'd not have a "store" card for any reason. The big CC companies usually have better customer support and protection.

I prefer a cash-back reward card and I use the hell out of mine. I pay off the balance in full every month. It least I get a few hundred dollars cash back for my purchases every year.

I definitely pay off the BB card and then cancel it in writing.

Better Business Bureau .... and remember the law still warns that only complaints in writing protect a consumers rights. So send off a letter to Best Buy and send Signature Needed.

In the past you use to be able to tell them a situation and they would correct it, especially if you were a good customer. I've been with a major company for 20 years and have 2 cards with them at the highest level of customer, 1 business and 1 personal. All of a sudden a few years ago I had a similar situation happen and they wouldn't budge, I was so pissed that I told them to close the account as well. I told them how penny wise and pound foolish they were being to look at how much I've spent, yada yada, it didn't matter. They transferred me to the retention dept., this is who tries to keep you if you want to close an account, and I explained the asinine thing they were doing. The only concession they offered was what you got, they will remove the late fees, which was a huge portion of it. I was still pissed but elected to take them up on it and move on b/c nothing I said was going to make a difference. They no longer give a $hit about good customers and all you can do is vote with your feet, which you did, good on you. But believe me they will send you to collections for the little amount they say you owe. Is it right? Hell no, do they care, hell no. My advice, pay them and go somewhere else, just realize they are all like this nowadays for some reason. I still can't believe that 20 years of making every payment on time and them making 3% on everything I've ever spent doesn't mean jack to them....baffling, but then again credit card companies are the lowest of the low honestly, they are a step above loan sharks if you don't pay them off in full every month. Good luck with it.

Dcj, my goal is to eventually get to that point where I don't owe anyone anything, but it's still nice to have an open line of credit for a legitimate major emergency.

Credit cards would be the worst choice when your in an "emergency" as you should have learned from your last mess with one. For an emergency you should have some CASH or at least some easily accessible money in a savings account is what you really need. :dblthumb2:

Say :nomore:to the credit card companies and YES to your own savings. Its a much easier and less stressful life TRUST ME and HD Detailing.

jfelbab: Have you ever tried to deal with AMEX customer service? They are one of the worst... same to who ever said use a banks card...have they ever tried to get a human with 2 brain cells from Bank of America???? Its almost an oxymoron thinking you can get good service from a credit card company at all.

Yes, actually I have. I had a couple reasons to deal with their customer support and I thought they were very good. Maybe it has to do with the attitude of the CSR you get. No complaints in my experience with AE, they were professional and courteous.
