My 7424XP is just over 1 year old and I think I've used it 3-4 times total.

Anyways, today I was polishing the headlights on my in-laws car with a 3.5" backing plate and Lake Country pads. I hit the headlights with M205 and was switching pads to finish it with PlastiX. While I was removing the pad from the velcro on the backing plate THE WHOLE BACKING PLATE, THREADS, AND BEARINGS PULLED OUT!

I've never had this happen before, is this normal?

I was able to push the assembly back into the buffer and it seems to work fine after but I'm thinking this isn't supposed to pull out so easily?

Thanks, Shawn

Shawn I would be very carefull using it .....it should not do that!

If you purchased through AG call them up they will help you on that.

seems like porter cables quality went down hill here recently, sad to say i wont be buying one any time soon, ill go with the griots or meguiars one. hope you get the problem sorted out....

I agree that it seems that its quality has gone down. This is the 7th person that I have seen in 2 months that has posted about PC problems on AG.

I am not a fan of PC either , but there are problems with every brand. If it's elector-mechanical it will brake down.

Agree 100%. Anything electronic will eventually break down---no such thing as bulletproof. That is why you buy the one with the lifetime warranty: Griot. It seems like a no-brainer plus it's the more powerful of the DA's.

sure anything mechanical will break down but when its completely coming apart that's a design flaw...i think everyone with porter cable problems needs to call them so if needed they can put out a recall notice on certain serial numbered or trace down what is making certain issues arise.

the pc7424xp would be my last choice, i would opt for the G110v2 or GG6 instead. while anything man made can wear or break down at any given time, at least the shaft hasn't broken of on the other two (or at least there hasn't been any reports just yet). i would be very dissappointed to be polishing and have that happen where the paint was gouged/damaged... :nomore:

My old original PC7424 is pretty much bullet proof. I have had it about 12 years. Never a hiccup. Hate to hear the new ones are not as solid.

I bought the Griots for its power, not, durability. It does make me feel better knowing it has the lifetime warranty.

Lifetime warranty is great, but they also had some problems and issues with their unit. Since it's lifetime warranty there is shipping and waiting hassle.
Since most are made in China you will have issues!

Product Catalog - Mshine Tools ( Jinhua.China ) Co., Ltd -- Dual Action Polisher Supplier

That's where most of our products come from irrelevant of the name on them.
My opinion only!

I agree - it's a major concern for people buying overseas, as a lifetime warranty is pretty useless, what with the cost of shipping the machine to and back. Very troubling to hear these issues with the PC, as I'd always thought it was the most reliable among the three - looks like I'll be going with G110v2, as it seems Meg's have now fixed the power cord issues (and if not, I can change a power myself easily enough).

If you buy a buffer you expect it to work well beyond the warranty period. If a PC or Griots quit after 4 years of hard, hard use, it's understandable. If one of those quit after 4 years of being used 2 - 3 times a year then I'd be peeved.

These days everything is built with planned obsolescence in mind - no small feat that laptop screen hinges usually break within 4 years of laptop manufacture.

I read a good book recently called "Poorly Made in China" by Paul Midler. Very interesting read and if you enjoy economics and reading then I'd definitely recommend it.

If the whole bearing assembly is coming out on a regular basis then it shows either a design defect or more likely a shortcut that was taken by the factory in the hope of saving a few dollars.

Thats so weird to hear of this happening. I bought a 7424xp for a detail shop I worked at. I beat the hell out of it daily for over a year and when I left that job, it was still working like it did the day I bought it. The backing plate was totally worn out though! Sucks this has happened to your polisher, hopefully it will get figured out for you.

I have a PC-XP, used it on about 6 cars so far and it hasn't fallen apart yet. I have a lot of other PC tools also, tools that I've used for years, and no problems with any of them.
You guys need to keep in mind that:
A) PC sells a couple hundred thousand (or even a couple million maybe) tools each and every year, and they don't do that because they're junk
and,
B) we're on a detailing forum. When 10, 20, or even 30 of thousands of detailers have a problem, this is where they're going to say something about it.
If you read that 10 people had a problem, but didn't read that 10,000 had no problem, does that mean the quality went down? I say probably not. It probably just means that you're on a forum, and this where those 10 people with a problem are going to go to talk about it...
If you like the Griots, go get one; if you like the Megs, go get one; and if the only thing you don't like about the PC is that a few people on a forum reported an issue, well just go get one, because chances are that it will be fine!
