Products that dont live up to the Hype

Maybe I need to get another rotary here soon if things start going in the right direction again... My old one is long DOA....

It was really old and died a respectable death after many years of service from back in the rocks in a bottle days.

It seems a nerve has been struck here. Nobody is insulting your wife! I realize people have their product lines of choice and that is fine. This reminds me of a ford/chevy debate. I have used 105 for almost 2 years before switching over and tried every new technique I could find. Other than dry buffing, 105 is not user friendly compared to newer compounds. The bottom line is there are much easier to use products. I don't use too much product and follow the instructions. Assuming everyone is doing it wrong is just ignorant of the facts. I am sure many do use to much product when they first start out. I have always said 105 gets the job done. I have done many cars and had awesome results. I just prefer some of the better compounds that have come out in the last year. I still use many megs products other than compounds and sealants it is about all I use. However I feel like many manufactures the focus on volume rather than quality. I am not trying to start a war here and neither is the op. People are entitled to their opinion. I came in with an open mind, tried many compounds extensively, and picked a favorite. I have been detailing for 20 years and love to learn new things and that is why I joined this awesome forum. The best advice I have is buy sample size bottles and see what works best for you. Do your homework before you touch a car.
 
This is the 1st time I've ever heard of a DG product being "difficult to use".

All I was pointing out was some posted like M105 dusts like rocks in a bottle on a wool pad like the old days..... From they way they describe it anyways...

Now that was dust.... :buffing:

M105 isn't anything like that at all, not even on the same planet....

I get more dust on my car from it just sitting outside most of the day than I get from using M105....

Yeah some of the new ones are water based and would cut down on some of it I suppose....

Orange Crush and Rainforest Rub is actually pretty good and spreads better than warm butter. As far as Hard Candy, just a regular wax.

Yeah I remember those products. It makes my eyes itch just thinking about it. I am glad there are many new choices today!

Brandon, I have and do try new products. So much hype accompanies anything new today, it's exhausting. Look at all the hype around Perfect Finish and now comes all this info that it's full of fillers. After a while, I stick with what I know will work for me almost every time. I used to be huge into Menzerna and now I'm into Megs. They're all good but you must know their secrets to make them excel. What I was venting about was people running down a good product due to their own inexperience and unwillingness to learn how to use it properly.

Regardless of the product I am using I am constantly reminding myself to use less and less product. Sometimes I find it hard to believe how little product is correct for the situation. But as I readjust to what I should have been doing in the first place I have found that I am getting some amazing results. Thanks to richy for the video on M105 it really was helpful.
 
I feel like I am kind of beating a dead horse here but I have had this experience with some of chemical guys products not living up to there own hype. Namely:
Butter wet wax- not a bad product, but there are better otc products
Glassworkz cleaner- it was hard to make this not streak
I think I have more of a problem with their marketing then their actual products, but I think this is the case in general when people say something doesn't live up to the hype.

It takes quite a while to learn to use 105 as it was designed to be used, (in small sections as to make best of the short working cycle) once I quit trying to make 105 something that it isn't I found that it works very efficiently and finishes better than anything else I've tried. Worked in small sections with the right amount it's fast and dusting is minimal but present. Dusting has always been part of the gig for me so it's no big deal.

No hype, it just works, plain and simple. Most who say it doesn't just want it to be something it's not or just can't get through the learning curve because they're chasing products.

Smaller. A few section passes in a one foot squared sections repeated over the car and it's really quick to get through the cutting stage even on the hardest of clearcoats.

It's only when trying to stretch your work section or adding stuff to the product that it becomes less effective.
 
Good old thread here and I remember us bringing up food in this too. Some people brought up Moe's Grill and I went there this past Sunday and although its good, better than Qdoba for sure but not even on the same block with Chipotle....IMO!

105 is over hyped. It works but there are better options. I feel sorry for new detailers buying and thinking that 105 is as good as it gets. I bought because of all the hype and was very disappointed.

I couldn't agree more. After using menzerna I'll never use m105 again. I'm sure it works for experts, but for newbies and weekend warriors like myself ...stay away...far away.
