Hi,

If I replace the stock plug of the PC with a UK fused plug and insert a 5A fast blow fuse, will that be enough to protect the PC from accidentally powering it up over a 220 mains?

I live in a country with 220v but my wall outlets are universal, so no problem for me using "any" plug.

This is just an additional protection that I thought of and not meant to augment d*mbness.

Cheers! :)

You should probably use a transformer to transform 220 to 120. You will have to check the amp of the PC and multiply that with the 120v and you will have watts. Then find a transformer that has a relatively close wattage.

Yes, I do have one. 1000w to be exact and is more than enough for a PC.

It's just that, will a fast blow 5A fuse be enough to protect the PC in the event that it's plugged in to a 220 source?

OHMS law:
Voltage = Amps X Resistance
So...in US
120v = 4.5a x 27(ish) ohms

So you need to do the math for the UK...
220 = ? X 27
220/27 = 8.15(ish) amps

The PC will draw about 8.15a max load. Your 5a fuse SHOULD protect it, but it may actually trip too easily.

Looking at this after the post I realize the math shows you probably can't use it over there. For wattage the numbers are crazy:
Voltage X Amperage = Watts
So:
In US 120 X 4.5= 540 watts
In UK 220 X 8.15= 1793 watts

If I understand my physics that means that it takes 540 watts to operate at top speed, which means the other 1200ish watts goes straight to noise and heat...

Let me know how it works out for you though. I don't know how much of this translates to a practical application.

i also have a PCXP with 120v and my country is 220v
and what i did was buying 500watt transformer and there is a switch in the back if its up it says 220v if its down says 120v
i simply switch it to 220v so it reduces the home electricity from 220v to 120v then i plug the pc to the transformer

yes the pc has 540 watts but i done about 5 cars with the transformer and no blowen fuses yet so no problem

just make sure u carefully read the description for using the transformer
