We all go thru this sacred rutine(clay, compound, polish, wax/seal) to protect our cars paint with the added beneft of making it look nice, but how much REAL protection are we getting from the elements? Is my clearcoat never going to peel off if i keep this rutine even if it sleeps outside 24/7?

Sealants and Waxes are real protection for paint against the elements. On this forum they are sometimes called "sacrificial barriers"; which I like.

Clearcoat will fail over time if protection layers are not maintained and environmental factors have their way with the paint. It may take 7-10 years for any failure to show and once it does show there is no way to stop it. On the other hand, if you are constantly polishing the paint some clearcoat is removed as well. Overall, with a good maintenance regimen, proper technique, and all other things being equal such as weather, maintaining the paint will lengthen the life of the paint compared to doing nothing.

I had a 1995 Saturn and never really did much about taking care of the paint. The last 8 years of it's tenure in my driveway was watching clearcoat failure across the spoiler, root and top portions of the vertical panels.

Thanks for clearing that up, i was browsing thru the clearcoat failure thread, and it scared me to death

JAJAJA, so I should look at my sealant as the zinc plates on my boat, good comparison!!!

In the Submarine force we call them sacrificial anodes...
There is the protection aspect. But there is also the beautification aspect. I have never been overly concerned with the longevity of a sealant or wax because I actually enjoy cleaning and polishing/ waxing my cars, so they get a fresh coating every 2 weeks or so after being outside 24/7. Also, this sounds crazy but my cars always feel like they run better when they are clean. I know it's a ridiculous placebo... but if it were true it would seem as though the car was thanking me for caring for it so much
