This is a thread about the weird and wacky universe of the insanely small. Come, take a tour into the micro-scale world of some of the most common detailing tools! I will be updating this thread randomly with pictures of all things related to detailing. Enjoy!

How Velcro Works!!! (the pad is being pulled away from the backing plate, notice how some strands are still hooked into the velcro "loops" being pulled tight)

Thanks for looking!

Very cool...I wonder how wax/sealant, compound/polish, surfaces look once applied, or bare paint before/ after application..I`m wondering if anything can be learned when comparing surfaces before and after application?

Very cool :)

Thanks for looking!

Cool!

You took those yourself?

Thanks! Yes, I took these with a digital 20x-800x microscope.

Thanx for sharing mate !
You're welcome! Thanks for looking.

That's very cool. Keep the thread going.
Thanks. I just got the microscope yesterday and I have been messing around with it for only a few hours. The kids loved it. The first thing they said was "let's look at a bug!!!"

I'm looking forward to testing this on a vehicle very soon. I played around a little on my wife's DD and I'm seeing A LOT of contamination that I can't see with the naked eye. I just clayed about 30 days ago too...

Bob, those are really cool! Looks like your pics are a little more magnified than what my microscope is capable of... Things start to look crazy if you zoom in far enough!!

Last night I figured out how to get everything focused at x800 magnification.

Here is the same red CCS pad in much closer detail. Now you can really see the sealant residue still coating most of the foam fibers within the pad. I believe this was DP Poli-Coat.

Holy crap, this is awesome! What microscope are you using? My daughter would love this

It's a no name brand off eBay. Picked it up for $40 delivered expecting it to be so-so. I figured even if it didn't work for detailing applications at least the kids would have fun with it... I'm blown away with the image quality!

Here is a deep scratch on my truck (courtesy of my wife). This one is from a frying pan that was sticking out of a shopping bag that sort of swung out and nailed the paint while she was climbing in the passenger seat.

Same scratch x200 magnification... It's filled with wax. But, it's so big you can still see it anyway with the naked eye.

I took some paint measurements and judging by the thickness of the scratch it's probably 70-100 microns deep. Through the clear for sure. This one aint buffing out. :(

MF towels look a bit nastier at that magnification. I can see how they would potentially marr a painted surface lol...

That last picture is pretty sweet.

Would be sweeter if it wasn't MY paint LOL!

Yeah, they look GNARLY up close! The higher quality ones definitely have more plushness that is easy to see up close compared to the el-cheapo Costo MF towels.

Very cool

Brand & model nr of the microscope please....

There doesn't seem to be a brand... The box literally just says "USB DIGITAL MICROSCOPE"

Here is what it looks like. If you do a search on eBay you will be able to find it pretty easily. There seem to be several of the exact same model that are always for sale from various sellers.

I got the 2.0MP, USB, 20-800x magnification model.

The software disc that it comes with is stupid. All it has is the driver. It basically functions like a web cam and it has the ability to take stills as well (obviously). You will want to download the "micro-capture" software online. I found it pretty easily just by doing a quick Google search.
