Fellow detailers,

For a while now I have been using Dawn (boo! hiss!) for cleaning the floor mats in my 05 Acura RL and my wife's 05 Toyota Sienna. Basically, I just squirt the liquid on the mats, scrub them with a stiff brush, hose them off, and hang to dry. I then dress them with Scotchguard for Autos.

My question is, am I causing harm to the mats cleaning them this way? Is there a better way to do it?

Thanks as always,

FFD

I don't know it Dawn harms them or not. I use a carpet cleaner like Folex on mine.

i always use a degreaser like mequiars all purpose cleaner or all purpose cleaner plus but i have also used dish detergent with no ill effects

brush them while they are dry

vacuum

treat spots

spray with apc/carpet cleaner and let dwell for 5 minutes

scrub with a semi stiff carpet brush

rinse thoroughly with pressure washer

brush most of the water out in one direction

extract( or vac the hell out of them if you dont have an extractor)

let dry

X 2 ^^^^^^

I'd have to guess that Dawn would foam up too much and not rinse out.

Are these rubber floor matts? If so, I use Simple Green diluted 30:1 and a brush, works great!

These are the OEM mats (carpet). I usually go with them until they get gnarly then I buy the Lloyd's Heavyweight.
