Question about gaining more customers

I was contacted recently by a local news station's Account Executive that runs their version of Groupon, on their website, called Yollar. It works like Groupon but it is sent directly to the news channel's email date base. Their are more details but it basically is a smaller group seeing your coupon which is good for just starting. They also offer two tiers of benefits for advertising depending on how much revenue your deal/coupon brings them.
This contact came about because I have my biz cards at a biz that a friend manages and the woman from the news station saw it and contacted me. So just having your biz visible will attract clients. I don't have a website yet, but will be getting one done by Spring. I have been reading a book[The Home Office from Hell Cure] that talks about different ways to make yourself a niche expert(Nexpert) in your business, and it states ways to market your business, and do speaking engagements, and writing articles and tip booklets. I have been working have been working on some of these things and plan to have my website work to publish the material I write. Things like Mike P.'s book aren't seen a lot especially in our industry, so when people in your area see that from you it will help you be seen as more professional/an expert. To start it just needs to be something that people can skim through and pick up your tips and attract them to you for business and advice.

Never offer free demos. People are mean and will own you if you do that because they will think youre spineless.

I agree. Nothing for free, keep photos of your work, solicit feedback and use your own vehicle as an example of your work. Being able to clearly communicate your detailing knowledge without bogging down the conversation with technical jargon also helps. I guess that goes hand in hand with knowing your audience. Some folks want to be educated more than others.

Just by dumb luck I have a friend with a few dozen exotics. He saw how I kept my car and to make a long story short now I handle his collection.

Consequently, it seems the only business I get is higher end vehicles. I think if you focus on your work that before long you'll look down and realize the car you're working on is something special.
