What are the advantages of using Menz SIP or even PG over a less expensive alternative? My thinking is that if I'm going to follow it up with finishing polish anyway, is there a reason to spend more for my first, agressive polish?

Menzerna offers the best polishes made in a very simple to use form that novice or professional can use alike. Its expensive, but your paying for the quality of the abrasive in the polish and how quickly it diminishes. Think of someone trying to get you a million pieces of sand all the same size with the same characteristics to break down at the same time. Others unfortunately are not as dedicated.

I understand WHY Menz are expensive and just how good they are. I'm using 106ff as my finishing polish and can see the difference. I'm just wondering about a first step... If I have to "clean-up" after the polish with 106ff anyway, why not user something cheaper for that first step?

For the "HEAVY" stuff, I go to Mez PG or HiTemp Magnum or Extreme Cut.

Those are my favorite compounds. I rarely stray from Menz when it comes to polishes, but I feel these make the cut. And they are super cheap too!

I'm not a believer that one polish is better than others, when it comes to looks. As long as swirls and marring is removed and the paint is leveled, I can't understand why one polish would look better than another. A polish finishes (or diminishes) with fine abrasives and if doesn't leave any marring, then any polish will look the same... So with this thinking that a polish will look the same wouldn't it make sense to use something that is easier to work with and will save you money?

budman, I can see a difference in 106 and XMT 1, I suspect the reasoning would be something like...

As the abrasives are broken down, they cut less and less and truely start to polish, the finer the particles can get while shtill being able to abrade the smoother the surface will become, Another factor would be the uniformity with which they break down, if "cheaper" abrasives break down at different rates than others (in the same polish) then the results would be less than optimal.

That's why I'm wondering about 1 step polishes (that are going to require further refinement any way), it doesn't seem like these factors would be as important if your following up with 106ff (or something similar) anyway.

Well one answer would be if other polishes won't get the job done. I have only used two aggressive polishes, but I had very little luck removing swirls with Optimum Hyper Compound on a couple of my cars, but SIP had no trouble at all.

I've used XMT 3, 1 and Menz Intensive, Final Polish and I think the difference is basically that you can get faster and easier results with Menz polishes. For instance, you need two passes of XMT 3 to achieve the results obtained with just one pass of Intensive Polish.

Hmmmm. If that's true, it would certainly change the economics of the choice...

Better quality abrasives that are completely uniform and burnish down much finer than others. A wetter, deeper finish with incredible glass like clarity.
Longer working time, no kerosene in it which shortens the working time and can give false results (presta uses kero as a lube in theirs)

Hi Temp Extreme power cut plus (HTEC 600 grit) is on the way from a lesser known florida based company and I'll be using that when PG doesn't cut the mustard.

Reason - well if it gives better results or gets out what a cheaper or different brand can't, then of course it's worth it

In Australia, Menzerna is cheap. $27 to 33 dollars a litre for all bar Ceramiclear's which are $35 to 45 dollars
Compare that to 3M which can cost anything up to $55 a litre over here for an inferior product

The reason I buy menz 106 from AG's is that we don't have gallons over here and it worked out far cheaper getting from the states.

Every polish is different and while you can get very similar results most of the time, if you spend the extra time, you will notice differences in the colour shade between brands plus depth, wetness and clarity

i also notice 106 takes quite a bit of time

That is a great easy to understand description...

I've used XMT 1 and 3 as well as 106 and I don't know that the XMT line "cuts" any faster than 106... it certainly flashes faster though.
