Question about MF towels

So I was reading the page about MF towels and "Higher weight = higher density = a thicker towel"

It goes on, "For example, the Miracle Towel is 330g/m². Each square meter of this particular microfiber weighs 330 grams. From this chart, you can see that the Miracle Towel is one of our thickest towels. "

According to the chart the Miracle towel is actually one of the thinest at 330g/m if the higher the number the thicker...right?

I see the Super Plush, Supreme 530, Shine & Buff, and the Chinchilla Buffing Cloth are higher, some double that of the Miracle towel.

Im confused.

Higher GSM usually means thicker, but not always. Some towels have heavy cores and short fibers, so they may not be very thick. Other towels have very long fibers but are low GSM. Search for Microfiber Madness towels, they are very high quality. GSM is not an indication of quality.

I think you are simply looking at copy that was written a long time ago, before those newer, thicker towels were added to the store.

Yes, higher GSM is *generally* a thicker, better, more plush towel. However, there are a few things to look for.

For instance; two towels I tested, one Costco Kirkland Gold and another, the Gold Plush Junior, which is identical to the Microfiber Tech 365 GSM both are within a few grams of each other. If you weigh out the towel, then do the math you can figure out the GSM.

Look at post 55 in this thread.

I weighed out a number of respected towels. What isn't in there are the Costco Kirkland Gold towels. They weighed in at around 61 grams each. That makes them easily a 365 GSM towel. But when you put them next to a GOOD 360 towel they are 60%~70% as thick. This is where the backing is heavyweight, but the loop and pile is short. They are one tough towel, but many people don't like them on paint at all.

Personally, I'll use them on hard paint without a worry. (Once they've been washed and tags removed.)
Although I probably have more towels, (especially different towels) than most anyone you'll find. Heck, yesterday I used a 700 and a 530 to apply DG951 and dry my car. :laughing:

All the talk from guys saying they'll use 600's and 700's to do rinseless and honestly, I can't imagine slopping around a 700 GSM towel weighing in at darned near 4 pounds all over my car! So yesterday, (on a whim) I went for drying and spreading Aquawax. It was fine for a while, but OMG does a dual plush towel get like a wet cat when it gets all wet.

Better yet, use half a dozen of each.

Do we suppose all cars be "Made in America"? What about Japanese cars, or Korean cars, or German cars, that JUST HAPPEN to have factories here? Or American cars that have factories in Mexico, or maybe in the far White North of Canada?


Are there towels to be found coming only out of Korea that are "better" than from China? Well yes of course. But that not withstanding, there are PLENTY of fine towels coming out of China. Including Korean cloth that just happens to be manufactured in China.

Funny thing though. I've been watching closely the towels that guys use on shows. World famous car builders like Chip Foose, Mark Worman, Peter Klutt, and to a lesser degree folks like Danny Koker and even Wayne Carini. None of them, NONE that I've seen have used a towel that even your entry level Autogeek wants to admit to using.

I was watching Chip Foose in the wee hours this morning, (just finished a 2014 Chevy Impala with a custom paint job), and was wiping it down with SEWN EDGE towels! Mark Worman builds six figure Mopars for a living and it looked on the season finale like he was using a 300 gsm with a zig zag cut edge wiping down a Daytona Charger, over and over and over and OVER. I was screaming at the TV, "Nooooooo don't do it! Stop wiping that paint with that cheap arse towel!". Same thing with Wayne Carini; heck he had NEVER used a DA to buff paint till Mike went up there last year and showed the guys in his shop the difference, and the fact that you actually CAN use a DA to polish paint.

Bottom line; knife to a gunfight, or gun to a knife fight. Getting a towel that'll do the job is ALL YOU NEED. Getting tangled up in WHERE towels are manufactured rather than how they are manufactured is something we just don't need to worry about. Buy what you like, like what you buy. From there it's all good.

A lot of microfiber is actually made in Korea but finished (cut, sewn in China). I do not think every Chinese made towel is unsuitable for use on paint. Some freak out when they see well known pro's and experts in industry using what they believe are inferior products but maybe they know something.

Exactly, goes for anything really. Worrying about COO is pathetic regardless of what you are purchasing. Just like the Made In USA tool snobs. I'm sorry but a Channellocks will never be better than a Knipex Cobra however if you want to buy them to "support your neighbor" go for it, just don't try telling me they are better because they say "Made in Merica".

China pumps out some good stuff, you just have to know how to deal with it and where to find it at good prices. If you don't want the headaches of that and have the money to spend then you can choose higher priced options for peace of mind, but otherwise shopping around and doing your own reviews like cardaddy and others have will be the most beneficial in the end.

I recently got some 1100gsm ones and while they were definately denser and heavier the pile seemed similar to my 700gsm ones. The towel was a bit thicker but not much. It was more like a brick than anything, not sure what I will use them for.

Yeah I have a couple of those 1100 Blue Whales. Got them free. Not much use for them from what I can see. Good seat cushions maybe?
