do you guys just take the entire payment after completing the work? or do you ask for half before and half after? ive always accepted full payment after i did my work, but requesting for half before seems like good insurance.

what do you guys think?

I would think asking for money up front makes you seem a bit untrusting unless you're dealing with someone who has had a payment issue in the past or a new customer that gives off a really bad vibe. In either case, I would stay away from both. I have read stories of detailers doing a HUGE job (like a big RV, top to bottom) and then the customer just disappears off the face of the earth. If a nonpayment at the end of the job ever presents itself, I think you can always call the police.

Never asked for money before I start a job. It has happened before but never because I requested it. Either the owner wasnt going to be around when I finished or similar situation.

thanks for the responses. yeah i guess ill just keep collecting at the end of a job, until i have an experience that makes me change my mind lol:P has anyone had a bad experience? ie customer not wanting to pay?

At least have a customer sign an estimate. Include your quote and any damages before you even touch it.

When I do mobile details I get paid once I am done with the jobs. On the other hand I have a golf course contract and I make sure I get paid up front since I dont want to wait 4 hours to get paid if it ends up being a slow day.

You can also use some 'pre-printed' work tickets (auto repair type). Most, if not, all include a "Mechanic's Lien" statement that the customer signs off prior to work being performed.

Getting paid upfront doesn't feel right, to me. Given that you have the vehicle as security for the payment you should be ok. Except, as mentioned, in cases where there are extenuating circumstances like the customer is not available after.

I think if you asked me I would tell you to beat it

Just do a good job and don't promise the Moon and you'll get paid
