Question about porter cable 7424xp

I just got done buffing my car now for the 2ed time using my new porter cable 7424 xp. I washed, clayed, paint clenser, sealant and then topped it of with some wax. My car is only 4 months old now so paint is in great shape. My question is how do you get around the body lines when using the DA the pad does not want to rotate. I know you need equal pressure all around to malke the pad turn. I was not pushing down hardly at all. I made a black line on the backing plate ect. I used 5 in backing plate with 5.5 CCS pads. I also used 3.5 backin plate with 4 in ccs pads for the tight areas. The 4 in I didnt have as much of an issue. I did with the 5.5 in when ever I was doing the doors back bumpers anything with body lines it would just vibrate. I know it has a weight in the DA and you have to have it with equel pressure or it wont turn so what can I do to be able to have it rotate all the time? I tried more pressure, less pressure, moving my hand around, with and without the hand grip. Any tips are a big thanks guys.. Feed back pleaseFeed back please
 
You have the right idea about keeping equal pressure. You need to sort of rotate the polisher so the center of the pad remains parallel with the surface. I am not sure if that is making any sense.

I am happy with it I gues I am just new at it but I love using it. I already bout over 100$$ in pads so I am going to stay with the PC but thanks for the thought..

That does make sense I may have been pushing back to far on the handle and not enough on the top of the PC. Thanks I will try that and see how it works..:xyxthumbs:
 
Do not forget, even though the pad is not spinning, it is still correcting. It will not correct as fast but it is still doing work, just at a slower rate.
 
I used my PCXP for the first time last week and also had some trouble keeping the pad spinning around the body lines. I think as much as flak as the PCXP takes on this forum it is more than capable of high quality correction work. I think we just have to get used to using the machine and get our technique down.

If I am not mistaking I think you need to crank the speed up a bit on PC when this happens.

I am with ya Drew. I do love the pc and think its just going to take some time to get it down. Its my first time using a DA and I really enjoy it. Knowing you cant hurt the paint is what sold me on it.

I went with a speed 3 for sealant and wax. I went with a 4.5 speed for the paint clenser. That was the recommended settings but I might try that next month when I do my wifes car.

I 100% agree with you. Its still vibrating if the pad is not spinning. My cars paint looked and felt so much better when I was done.

If the pad is vibrating as I found out with my PC it will correct as good as 30$ Black and Decker.I was not happy with its performance so I got rid of it and got G110V2 and no more vibration. I did find out then when excessive vibration was present with PC if you turn the speed up it performed much better. Just my 2 cents.
 
I have been using my PC 7424XP for about 1 1/2 now. Some things I've learned (sometimes the hard way) are . . .
  • Don't use the handle
  • For correction, use speed 6
  • 6.5 pads don't work nearly as well
  • It's not a good practice to polish right on top of body lines
  • If you polish on both sides of the body line, that 1/8 inch space isn't going to make much of a difference

what size of pad is ideal to work for paint correction or removing swirl? TIA

I have this machine as well. I'm a new da user and have read alot of info on this forum. It's like Mike P says "there's an art to it". I have used mine only 4x

and using tips I read here I am already getting the pad to turn more consistently on all surfaces and angles.
