Greetings

Was curious, does the "footprint" of a pad increase as the speed of the tool increases? In other words, if one were to hold the tool perfectly still, would the "polishing area" be smaller than it would if the rotation/orbit speed was increased?

Thanks!

No, the orbit is fixed in that once it’s moving, it follows the same pattern each time. This is why we get that cool snakey effect when you run your section passes, and it’s a nice uniform ‘tube’ shape.

Meaning, a 15mm DA will not run at 15mm on high speed but only 5mm at the lowest speed.

The amount of surface area contacted is always the same. The number of orbits and/or rotations of the pad over that same area in a given time frame is what changes with speed adjustment.

I agree the orbit is fixed on the machine itself, however I suspect a new pad vs an old pad you will see a slight variance. Old worn pads will "sling" out at higher speeds vs a fresh new pad IMO. But not enough to be concerned about.

I hadn’t accounted for the amount of ‘slop’ either in the Velcro backing itself, the adhesive or even just the sort of ‘jelliness’ of used foam vs new.

However like you said, probably less than 1mm of overall effect if I had to guess.

A thing I have noticed is with a bigger pad than the backing plate you dont get the same correction outside of the backing plate. I have a 21mm longthrow polisher and have not any experience with other da polishers. Is this a common thing to pads that has a 5" backing plate fit but a 6" widht to the pad that is on the paint? Because I thought as you that it didnt oscillated as your question was. Is it more even correction to a perfect fit 5" pad to the backing plate and 5" to the paint than a 5" backing plate fit pad and 6" to the paint? Hope I get thrue with what I mean with my questions LOL I think it's cald ghost something lol

Kevin brown over at buff daddy has an extensive article on perfect fit pads to backing plates I believe.
