Hey guys,

I have read many threads discussing the importance of using dawn soap to strip the cars and then claying them after before i apply a nice polish to achieve a glossy waxed finish and since I have been doing it lately my cars have been coming out looking and feeling like glass.

My one question is whether or not there is alternative to to the instant detailer spray that Mothers supplies with the clay bar as I feel that the spray is going to run out before the clay bars. I try to not spray to much on each panel prior to gliding the clay over it however I have only done 5 vehicles and the spray is running out and I dont want to have to go buy another mothers kit just for the spray. ANY IDEAS?????????

There is an easy answer to this, you can water down the quick detailer provided with the clay bar kit, I usually go with a 1:1 ratio. You might wanna pick up some rinseless wash, make up some clay lube with it and you'll have so much left over to make a good quick detailer and ofcoarse, use it to wash your car, this makes the most sense and cents! The last thing you wanna do when claying is have too little clay lube on the surface, not only does it make the clay dry up on the surface thus needing to be wiped off which can be a PITA, but your not letting the clay do the job its supposed to do, so make sure the panel your working on has alot of clay lube on it!

BTW, the use of Dawn dishsoap to strip you car is a topic of much debate here on AG and IMO, if it "takes grease out of your way", why would you wanna use it on your paints clearcoat, its there to protect your car and although one application of Dawn isn't going to ruin the CC right away, I just wouldn't do it. If your planning a major detail, well, a good car wash, followed by a good claying will get your paint nice and clean and ready for polish and finishing with your favorite wax or sealant.

Wouldn't any off the shelf QD work? That way he just has to spend like $10 and not buy a whole kit? I had the Meg's kit. Did 4 vehicles before I got low on the "lube" and had to dilute.

Total cost of ownership is likely lower if you use a concentrate compared to purchasing $10 bottles. If you apply this principle to every detailing product then in the long run you will save $$$ as well as know where you are paying a premium and where you are not.

I just put some water and a random amount of whatever car wash detergent I happen to be using at that time into a clean spray bottle. It hasn't failed me in ten years.

I hear ya there but in a pinch it would be ok?

I've started using Ultima Waterless Wash Plus after using dedicated QD like Meguiar's and Griot's. I paid around $21 and it makes five gallons. It is does just as good as a job and is significantly cheaper.

I LOVE UWW+ but find it too slick to be a good clay sometimes, I always use ONR clay dilution ratio when claying...:xyxthumbs:
