IMO claying is one of the most important steps.
+1!!!!!

Prep work is key! It would be like building a house on dirt instead of concrete! You need a good foundation to work off of!

Definitely, from that list is under the hood. As a matter of fact I have never detailed under the hood.

I skip claying. Usually if it's a package I have to clay on, the compounds I use gets it clean anyway.

I still use clay though, just not as much as I should.

My most skipped steps would be under the hood and undercarriage. I'll do under the hood of my personal vehicle about every three months or so, or unless its really dirty. I won't do it for customer cars unless requested and for extra $.

As far as claying, I will always clay a car before polishing. I just don't like the notion of polishing/compounding a surface with all those contaminants on the surface -its just asking for trouble IMO.

Does any one here even do any thing to the undercarriage?

On my truck and others I use apc then spray with wet look or AA on the rear diff., frame rails and all other parts easily seen since it sits higher than a car would.

Claying, nobody wants to pay for it......

The only person that's not into detailing that sees the significance is my best friend :p

Actually behind the wheels the stuff you can only get off if you pull the wheels.

Claying is the biggest pain in the arse, I hate doing it especially because my clay aways falls apart, there is dirt everywhere and the marring induced from claying means getting the buffer out everytime.

NO THANKS!!!

if your going to buff, claying can become redundent

no necessarily ... remember polishes grind and abrasive into the paint. A clay can pull a contaminent up and away from finish. Thus both should be done as possible.

Not polishing pipes when in a hurry. I know it's a capital offence but...Like Gary Sword I hate windows but you still have to do it and the interiors are what I do the best.

Why not if the paint is contaminated? Well, the bozos who won't pay won't get a good detail.

if you don't clay don't you run the risk of polishing little bits of dirt into the finish? doesn't make much sense to skip that step IMO

I too am guilty of skipping claying. I always use a Polish/Cleaner but heard all the clay hype here so did an expiriment. Clayed one side of a hood and polished the other side with Pinnacle Paint Cleansing lotion. To my eyes and touch I could not tell a difference in the two sides but the Polish side was much easier to do and less messy. Maybe I'm missing something with the whole claying process.
