Rain X?

That info would tell me that Aquapel is a sealant type product (not a bad thing). Rain-X says nothing apart from it is very high in water soluble solvents and makes most of the IPA dilutions used by AGers (which get stressed over massively!) look like soft drinks.
Thanks for your reply. Appreciate it.

Even though my vehicles don't have an Aquapel-treatment...
I've put it on some friends' vehicles, and they seem to like it pretty well.

A few years back I was a participant in a "Landolt C" type of visual-acuity-testing program,
involving two different (and unknown prior to testing) hydrophobic windshield treatments.

An Aside:
I received some very queer looks from the program administrators when
I asked if this was to be considered a double-blind test. But I digress.

The results were staggering in favor of Aquapel over RainX.
Following are the MSDS's for each of these products.

My question is:
Since the manufacturer of Aquapel claims that it chemically bonds to auto-glass:
Is this treatment a Sealant, or a Coating? Thanks.

Bob

AQUAPEL Glass Treatment MSDS
SECTION 2: INGREDIENTS: proprietary mixture...100%

(NOTE: I could be wrong but I thought I once saw an MSDS where it once said it was:
Naptha ~90%; and was an: alkylalkoxysilane/siloxanes solution)

Rain-X Original Glass Treatment
(A mixture of water, alcohols and additives.)

2. COMPOSITION/INFORMATION ON INGREDIENTS
Chemical Identity......CAS#.......Concentration
Ethanol.................64-17-5.............30-60%
Acetone ...................67-64-1.............10-30%
Isopropyl alcohol...67-63-0.............10-30%

Wow! Those are the ingrediants for Rain-X? I am baffled! How can this bind and repel water?

Those ingredients don't. The ingredients doing the job are not hazardous so are not identified.

You're correct about the naptha.

Personally i have no faith in RainX. I have yet to use their glass cleaner due to how bad their wiper blades are i just dont trust the company. Im not a big fan of hype. Like Boss speakers, Iphones, and to keep on topic rain x. There is clearly better stuff out there but because of marketing and a gullable persons word of mouth people will argue tooth and nail that the brief 3 products i just mentioned are the best when they arent. I am currently looking for a rain repellant that will also stand up to ice. But rainx would be my very last resort.

Btw this isnt to bash any ones belief in the product its just my opinion. Being as i have never personally used rain x window cleaner i cant say how it preforms. It could be the best product ever introduced to man for all i know. Hopefully i didnt offend any one like i said its just my personal opinion. :)

I use rain-x every 2 months on my car and wouldn't use anything else

Hype usually comes from somewhere. Either the product really is the best that is, or it was in the past or they have thrown so much money at advertising that people believe it is the best.

So in the case of Rain-X, when was the last time you saw a Rain-X ad? Personnally I have never seen one. So I think we can rule out number 3. Is it the best right now? Probably not, but is it the best value? I think it probably is. A bottle cost something like 5$ and will last years. You only need a few drops to do a whole windshield and it lasts for a month or 2. In comparisson, Aquapel that many people seems to point at for best product cost something between 50$ and 100$ for a single application from what I understand. Ok it lasts a lot longer, say 6 months to a year but is it Worth to pay 1000s of time more for it? I don't believe it is.

As for iPhones and other products, that is a matter of taste. Being the owner of a Samsung Galaxy S4 I really regret switching from iOS to Android. When my contract ends in 18 months I will be going back to Apple for my next Smartphone. The fact that Google now controls something like 80% of the market with Android devices doesn't mean they are better. So in a sense I can agree with your view on hype (even if you named the iPhone in your exemple).

Idk, their wiper blades just left a bad taste in my mouth. I agree with you as far as value after looking at the cost of rain repellants. However i look at it this way. I can get a burger from McDonalds or i can get one from a 5 star restaurant. One cost a dollar one cost 30 dollars. Both will fill me up but one will taste better and make me more satisfied. Ill eat that McDonalds burger and ill eat it often but man am i happy when i eat that gourmet burger.

Unfortunately for me rain x is just one of the few companies i dont like. Every time ive ever replaced some wiper blades or i told some one they needed some. There is always one random person that jumps out of an office building window to tell me about rain x wiper blades... Ive used them, ive known people that use them, my parents use them. My personal opinion from my evaluation of them is they are mediocre at best and i think im being nice with my judgement. So when i think rain x im reminded of their wiper blades and i just cant commit to spending any money on the product. Thats just how i feel about their company. As stated before though i may be missing out on a great product i have no idea.

I don't really like or use rain x but I have their latitude wiper blades and have no complaints about them. But then again, I never need to use them since my glass is coated lol.

Never used their wiper blades so I can't really comment. I have used their fog prevention product and it did not work at all for me. Maybe I did not apply it correctly, I don't know. But when I used it, the first time it rained the windows all fogged up... so I haven't used it since.
