2008 VW R32, paint correction only.

The owner recently purchased this car out of state. It has about 45,000 miles on the clock and the paint was in pretty rough shape. Upon inspection you could see heavy cob-webbing and a few noticeable RIDS. The owner and I talked about different options and we opted for a 2-step correction, which was in his budget and I felt should reach his desired goal of 90-95% correction. I had also offered to spot hit the RIDS with M105 and then planned to do the whole car with SIP and PO85RD via the rotary. After doing a few test spots the webbing was easily removed by SIP, but it reveled more of the deeper scratches, which would not come out without several passes of SIP. My OCD got the best of me and I went ahead and did a 3-step correction. I phoned the customer and said I was unhappy with the amount of correction I was getting with my planned process and that I was going to do the extra step at no extra charge. With the below process I felt I easily achieved 95% correction, if not more. ;)

Process:
Wash – Meguiars Gold Class using the 2BM
Wheels – P21S gel and various brushes, ZAIO, Opti-Seal
Tires – Amazing Roll Off, Hyper Dressing 3:1
Clay – Meguiars Mild Clay, Last Touch (Owner had recently clayed and the car didn’t need much claying)
Trim – Meguiars Ultimate Protectant (Lab Sample P)
Glass – Meguiars D120
Headlamps - M105/M205/ZAIO
Taillights – M205/ZAIO
Door shuts – ZAIO (M105/M205 on the rockers)
Correction step 1- M105 via rotary and wool pad
Correction step 2 – M105 via PCXP and Cyan LC Hydro pad
Correction step 3 – M205 via PCXP and Tangerine LC Hydro pad
LSP – Blackfire Wet-Diamond

It was supposed to rain the final day so I quick pulled the car out to get some sun pics while I could. This was right after M205 and no LSP on the car yet.

Hahaha! Thanks Buddy! :)

Very nice work as usual Rasky. I really want to try that 105/205 combo.

Thanks Dave! Try them! You won't look back once you do! :props:

Maroon Solo. ;)

Looks great Chad nice turn around. How do you like the new hydro pads so far.I haven't used mine yet

Maroon Solo. ;)

Well, I no longer use the Yellow pads. I really do not wish to use the orange pads. Anthony introduced me to the Purple Foamed Wool pad. I used it on the Lexus RX 330 yesterday and this afternoon. That wool pad RULES!!!!!!

6 Pack Foamed Wool 7.5 Inch Polishing/Buffing Pads

Those pads make the paint feel nice. Espcially when you top it off with Optimum Instant Detailer & Gloss Enhancer.

Optimum Instant Detailer & Gloss Enhancer Quick Detail Spray, instant detail spray, spray detailer, waterless wash, opt quick detailer

Thanks Adam! :)

I think I need to play around with them some more before giving a solid opinion on them. I like the feel of the LC Classic better since the Hydro's are so stiff, but they definitely did a nice job on this car. ;)

The PFW are definitely nice, weird not having a normal backing to them though.

Great job Chad. I am with you on the pads, need to spend some more time with them myself.

Rasky (or others),

Do you think those Foamed Wool Pads would achieve much correction (i.e. more than an LCS yellow) on a Dual Action machine like the new Griot's? I have the 4 inch version but don't know if one would get enough "spin" out of a DA machine to really let this wool (or any wool for that matter) do what it is supposed to do. I have not used mine yet because of the above concern but your results have me reconsidering my options.

Thanks and VERY nice result on that Blue Monster,

Martin

Sorry I can't be of much help with your question though. I've actually never used the PFW or yellow LC pads on the DA. If I can't get correction with orange LC pads (or similar) on the DA I step up to the rotary. I would think the PFW would be safer than the yellow LC though as it won't generate as much heat. I really only use 4" pads for tight/small areas. The black pillars on this car were actually done with 4" orange and white LC pads. The rest of the car was done with 5.5" foam on the DA

OK Rasky - Thanks.

I'm rather new to the whole "machine" approach which is why I've been using the 4 inch pads. More control, less drag than the bigger pads on a DA. I will experiment with my 4 inch Foam and see what I get compared to the LCS yellow. Other than that, this time next year (Chicago) I will probably be stepping up to a rotary. I just work on my own cars and those of a few friends for now and so far everyone is thrilled but I am a little (lot) OCD so you know where that leads!

Best Regards,

Martin

Wonderful job as usual Rasky. Almost looks like you even got rid of those RIDS! (no pun intended) ;)

Two questions for you:

1) Do you feel you actually like the M105/205 combo better than any Menzerna combo? I use IP/MicroP right now, and feel that it does a great job. Heck, I even like WG TSR/FG too. But was just wondering if I need to try the Meg's now too.

2) I have a Nikon D60, any tips on how to capture those swirls on film so well like you do? I have problems getting them to show on my photos, but they're definitely there! Esp with the brinkmann that I have. How do I get them to show up? seems like the camera has a hard time getting to focus...

That color came out great. I love the R32 I wish VW had better reliability rating.
