Re Frankenstorm Sandy

Just got power about an hour ago here along the shore. Towns around me still without power and other towns are almost wiped off the map in places. This was no joke, people walking around in a dazed state.

Power to our neighborhood was restored around 6pm last night. It was a beautiful thing to see. I was standing in the kitchen when it happened. Took about a second or two to realize.

My heart REALLY goes out to all you folks during such a trying time.

Hang in there, a LOT of people are pulling for you.

I still find it shocking that the center of this storm passed almost over my head yet we came away virtually unscathed and folks up in NY and NJ are still battling the elements.

I absolutely respect the people who are going out of their way to get their hands dirty and help those folks out. I know things could have easily been much worse here and hurt inside a little for the people who lost loved ones and babies. That could have been my loved ones and baby.

Whats more, the northeast is possibly due for another fairly sizeable nor'easter late next week.

I find this insensitive. I have lived through more hurricanes than I would like to recount. My family in NJ got shredded and are in dire straights. Not only do they have to rebuild a building that they just rebuilt last summer after Irene hit, Their insurance deductible is enormous for windstorm protection:nomore:.

weird because those are all in places outside of "NoVA"
if you would read my entire post then you wouldn't be offended if you'd like clarification of what nova is, its Northern Virginia.

I'm well aware that in other locations the situation was very different I was just reporting in -> from nova.

Also something to think about, how many other countries have we helped in their times of need, how much money, resources and man power have we "used" on others?

How many people have helped us with our natural disaster?

Just some food for thought.

At a friend's using the internet. Still no power. LIPA was supposed to come today (for all non-Long Islanders that's Long Island Power Authority lol) today and restore power by 11pm, but it looks like it could be tomorrow, or a few days afterwards. We had a tree fall on our aboveground power line, snapping it off the house, and covering the driveway. It's now clear. At one point, every street to gain entrance/exit from our neighborhood was blocked by a down tree. Luckily, a neighbor cleared one street up, then the town helped out some more. Things are getting gradually better. My heart goes out to anyone who lost their home, or worse, any of their family members. My family and I were very lucky, and I'm feeling blessed that we're all okay, and normalcy will hopefully return soon. All I have left to say now is Autogeek needs to do a SuperStormSandy SuperSale! 10 or 20% off with free shipping? My car is a wreck!! Plastered wood shavings on the underside and undercarriage, dirt, debris....luckily no dents though. Stay safe everyone.

While the Eastern Shore of Maryland and the corridor North East along I95 took the brunt of the storm and recorded the most rainfall, other areas were hit with power outages and damage from fallen trees and flooding.

In our case, we live in Northwest Baltimore County and lost our power at 9 pm Monday night. It wasn't restored until 3:30 am Wednesday morning. In addition I had several trees fall onto my chain link fence in my back yard. About 50' of fencing needs to be replaced as well as part of my next door neighbors fence. It could have been a lot worse but it was bad enough as it will still cost me to have the trees removed.

I haven't been on the forum very much as I had to have major back surgery this summer including three laminectomies for spinal stenosis. Therefore I have to have others do the cutting up of the trees and cleanup work that I would have been normally done myself in the past.

Now that things have returned to a somewhat normal situation again I wanted to follow up on our damage issues. After placing an ad on Craigslist for free firewood I had numerous phone calls and several people came over to check things out. Bottom line is that one fellow came and was able to remove the fallen limb that was still attached to the tree and then took down the entire tree.

My brother, a fence and deck contractor, was able to access the fence damage and we submitted an estimate to the insurance company. He also wrote an estimate for my next door neighbors fence that was also damaged.

I am now looking into getting a back up generator, probably propane powered, in the event of another electric outage. The tree cost me nothing to remove, a bonus because I was sure that I would need to call in a tree company and my fence will be repaired and I will only have to pay a deductible.

The generator and propane system look like a big investment at this time. That I will shop around to make sure that I'm getting a fair deal.

God bless you hand. Thanks for keeping us informed.
Looking foward to seeing you post regularly again.

I'm in farmingdale. Power / heat was restored monday night (after 7 days). that was fun. God bless my honda generator

now the gas lines. I recommend filling a red can at the pump instead of waiting on line with your car. much quicker now that more people have power (and dont need their generators)

also, try the gas buddy. search by your zip and it shows you who has gas

my street corner after the storm. You can see the telephone pole half knocked down by the big tree

and some photos of flooded areas on the south shore. This is around Lindenhurst. maybe 10 mins from my house. Check out the water line on the fence. This place is like a half mile+ from the bay normally

You folks in NJ and New York certainly took the brunt of the storm and suffered most of the damage. It will take a long time to restore everyone to their before storm status again and some people may never fully recover at all.

Our hopes and prayers go out to everyone who was affected by this huge storm,

Update: still no power, but we've been sleeping over friends's and relatives's houses. LIPA is supposed to come by at the latest, Sunday, so we'll see!

Thanks for being concerned and for the tupac quote :P makes me feel a bit better about running around from house to house. I'll be so glad to be back in my own bed xD

Thank you guys for all the kind words. Sandy was a destructive storm and the noreaster yesterday didn't help. Amazing, out of all the forums, it seems like the best people are right here on autogeek.

Hey this is for the writer who was wondering who was helping you during your time of need, I am from the Maritimes here in Canada, New Brunswick to be exact and I know that our power utility company sent as many men and trucks that they could spare to help out. I know that we sent some military personel down to help as well. We only have 33 million people in this country as opposed to 330 million in the USA, so when we help it may not seem like much to you but we help out as much as we can. Just like you do for us,thanks for listening to my rant.

amen xD. Luckily, the noreaster wasn't too bad for us..since we haven't gotten power back in the first place, we didn't have it to re-lose ;P I did appreciate the beauty of the snow, and it turned out that b/c of the temperature today, the roads were fine. Minimal damage around us too so that was good. Hope you fared the storm okay...Autogeek is part of my extended family for sure :P

A contingent of volunteers from the Maryland State Police and BGE, Baltimore Gas & Electric, our local utility are also in NJ & New York offering assistance to the local authorities in helping to get the power back on line and doing emergency rescue work.

Volunteer utility workers from Alabama had been in Maryland to assist BGE and when they were no longer needed they went to New York only to be turned away because they weren't union. That makes a lot of sense during a tragedy like this when New York should be thankful for any outside help they can get.

Having had lived in the NW (Washington) for many years, I can only say thank you to the many Canadians and various Canadian companies that have come to help out when the poo has hit the fan.

At times like this, there is NO border between the two countries.

Thank you!
