after tackling the water spots on my glass.. (Diamondite glasswork kit ftw) im now looking to take on my paint... there are water spots EVERYWHERE... they arent too bad yet but i noticed them and thats enough... whats a good compound? i definitely plan on starting light and moving up but what should i start with...

also what could i use to remove the spots from the trim?
 
problem is waterspots etch paint and thus may not always removable without wetsanding. If you decide to use a compound, XMT and Optimum are forum favorites.
 
Heard good stuff about XMT but havent used it. My go to that I use is Optimum and love it.
 
Optimum Compound or XMT 3 or 4 might do the trick. But like Killr said, depending on how bad the etching is you might need to wetsand.
 
Research Presta products. Very good results in little time.
 
I've heard good things about Presta too, I haven't tried it my self personally that's just what I have read.

I don't know how the XMT line up would do, I have used the XMT and it does remove quite a bit but I agree water etches and it may require wet sanding. If that is the case wet sand then you can finish it off with XMT line up.

I wonder if water etching can be removed with just a compound?...mmmm...curious..
 
wet sanding scares me... the subaru factory paint is thin... and ive never touched wet sanding... i figure if i cant get it with a compound ill reconsider the respray option lol...
 
Well if you're planning on repainting anyways, then might as well try the wet sanding if the compound doesnt work.
 
Depends on how deep the etching is, some areas are more prone to higher concentrations of acidicy in the air which will make the water etchings deeper and harder to remove. I have some very faint etchings on my paint, but you can just barely make them out and have to look at them at an angle, otherwise their un-noticeable. I personally love Optimum Compound, very strong cutting but finishes like a polish.
