Meguiars APC Problems

"Meguiars D101 has a pH of 13 in concentrate. That is one level below oven cleaner. Diluted 10:1 it has a pH of 11.959. Diluted 50:1 it has a pH of 11.292. It seems a bit too alkaline for interiors"

I'm not saying APC or D101 doesn't have its place, but unless you are dealing with a putrid interior, you can clean just as effectively with a pH neutral cleaner. Even on my daily drivers that I attend to, one them from a heavy smoker, I never require such alkalinity. As for the garage queens, again, its either a interior detailer or simply a damp towel.

Now, if you are a pro detailer tasked with cleaning heavily soiled and neglected interiors, sure, I can see the value in having a heavy duty APC.

I mean why does that matter if it’s effective and has never caused any sort of damage? I’ll also add that @10:1 it’s never felt like it’s ever been too strong on any surface.

At the same time it’s not a product that I’ll ever use straight undiluted for heavy duty purposes because I’ve never found it to be very effective for that and I also don’t like the strong smell it presents. Overall an unpleasant user experience IMO diluted anything beyond 10:1.

But it’s never felt too strong for any interior duty. If I was left with just 1 product to maintain a vehicles interior for its entire life I’d be my 1st choice.

Even with a gallon of Interior Detailer like Mckee’s Quick Interior on my shelf, I rarely ever use it on any vehicle because while it smells really good it just lacks the needed cleaning power even for normal maintenance wipedowns which is why I make sure to keep 2 bottles of Megs APC ready to go at all times.

1 product that is considered lighter which I do find very effective at cleaning & conditioning is Blackfire Leather Complete. I’ve been meaning to buy some more but have been putting it off simply due to its price.

I like Meguiars Quik Interior Detailer in every way, but some of my clients don’t like the way it smells and that’s the only reason I don’t use it right now.

Darren from Auto Fetish Detail on youtube has been maintaining vehicle interiors almost exclusively with Megs APC for over 20yrs. and he’s stated many times that he’s never seen any adverse effects from using it.

I quite liked QID for a while there, the scent was fine with me. But for some reason, I've noticed it has a somewhat "sweaty change room" aroma to it, so I could fully understand why people would find it offensive. It does finish down very nicely though.

Same here. I like everything about it. To me it smells kinda like vinegar but I got used to it. But like you said I can understand why people might find it somewhat unpleasant.

I might pick up a gallon just for the heck of it since it’s fairly cheap + I already have the 32oz. dispenser bottle for it. There’s a chance the scent isn’t as strong as people have always said it may have been a weird batch back then.

When I first tried QID, I got the retail size bottle and wondered what the fuss was about because I thought it smelt fine. I actually liked it so much that I went and bought the gallon size and continued to enjoy it. I have since noticed that vinegar smell too, considering I'm still using that original gallon and it would be about 3 years old now. I'm wondering if it goes that with age?

No there has always been a complaint over the gallon smell. Been noted it is different than the OTC.

For Quick interior detailer’s my fave has been Adams Quick interior detailer. Works great. You can tell you applied something but has that new look.

Interesting, thanks for the feedback.

I've been using Ethos Interior Detailer a bit recently, which is probably the same formula as the Adam's.

I am just curious why you said that about the 2 products, are the brands related or the same bottler or something?

Like I said, just curious

I liked the consumer Meg's QID so I bought a gallon but for some reason I do not like the scent soon after I started using it. It has some off smell. I added some PB's cherry scent to mask it. I wonder if the scent changes over time (shelf life). I still have 1/2 gallon left without the cherry scrent and will likely toss it.

Adam's Polishes is supplied product from B&B Blending, both were sold to Recochem in 2020.

"Adam’s Polishes and B&B Blending will operate as subsidiaries of Recochem and represents our first operations in the US."

"Adam’s Polishes and its production company B&B Blending both have strong technical teams that continue to develop new formulations and products for a wide range of uses."

B&B Blending supply a number of brands with products, more than we probably realise, Ethos is just one example. From what I can gather, B&B supply a base formular that is then tailored for the brand in question, think unique scent/colouring/labels. For the most part, you will notice these products being put into the same dome top spray bottles.

Adam's Mega Foam and Ethos Foam Party are the same product, color and scent aside.

Adam's Slick-n-Slide is the same base formula as Ethos Pro Shine.

Adam's H2O Guard & Gloss sounds very similar to Ethos Dry and Seal.

Adams Graphene Tire Dressing and Ethos Graphene Tire Shine another.

Hence my assumption with Adam's Quick Interior Detailer and the Ethos alternative.

Same story with me, and I think you might be onto something regarding shelf life. I actually just emptied the last of my gallon of QID, the aroma has only gotten worse. The best way to describe it would be white vinegar mixed with body odor..............not a pleasant scent to introduce to an interior.

I knew about B&B supplying lots of retailers but thanks for the clarification

Kind of an incestuous business relationship setup

I know people fought over Topper and where it actually came from so you got to wonder about every new startup and just how "revolutionary" the new products are

I have never tried either Adams or Ethos products, although Adams is available locally at a couple of auto parts stores and Walmart

I thought of trying Adam's at one time. Their Graphene Spray Coating, Hoseless Wash, Rubber/Tire Cleaner and Shampoo seem decent. Their Strip Wash is now an acidic wash and gets good reviews.

Has anyone tried Armour Detail Supply's new interior detail spray Pilot? It is a pH neutral cleaner that also provides some protection. Just curious what people think about it.

That brings up a question I’ve had for a while

What do you folks prefer for routine interior maintenance when it’s not a disaster that requires harsh chemicals and a flamethrower

Just a good cleaner, like Express

Or a cleaner with some protection built in as joebruin77 just mentioned

Or a good cleaner followed up by a standalone protectant like 303 Aerospace or something similar

Obviously the all in one would be the choice if time is a factor but just suppose this is only a hobby and you have time on your hands

I just ordered a bottle of Labocosmetica's Ductile APC and I am very happy with it

No it’s different/bad scent has been a known problem for years.

I really like Adam's products and recommend them quite a lot.

Slick-n-Slide (which is OG Drying Aid/Ethos Pro Shine/Xtreme Solutions Topper) is such a lovely product to use. Sadly, the local importer has stopped offering. Funnily, Adam's originally stated that Slick-n-Slide was not supposed to be used as a drying aid, but everyone did. They have since changed the product description to reflect that. At its core, this is a polymer sealant that is supremely slick and easy to apply. Smells amazing too.

Their Rubber & Tire Cleaner is one of the best on the market. I loved having it on hand, but while a 16oz bottle is reasonably priced, a gallon retails for $149.99! I can mix up TWO gallons of Shine Supply Wise guy for $50 LESS than that. I real shame because I would otherwise have it on tap.

Of the three maintenance soaps, the red Mega Foam is the best of the bunch. It sort of does everything; foams, slickness, cleaning, rinses well. Again, price puts me off in Australia, but in the US its a screaming bargain.

The Graphene Tire Dressing is awesome! I don't buy into the graphene thing, but I can't argue with the way it makes tires look. Easily one of my favorite tire dressings.

If I was being truthful, one would only ever need a damp microfiber towel for what you describe above. But where is the fun in that?

Xpress works well for quick wipe overs like this as it flashes away and leaves no residue. But even Xpress is overkill in this situation.

For something like my Mustang (over pampered garage queen), I've been using Carpro InnerQD for quick wipe overs. I like how this leaves a completely clean, undressed look. It's also fine to use on gauge clusters and screens, I have also used it on leather.

On something like my Ranger (well-maintained daily driver), I've given up applying an interior dressing/protectant and now stick with the interior quick detailers that have some mild dressing element to them. These products include P&S Swift (excellent product, just enough "enhancement" without looking like an oil slick), Ethos Interior Detailer, DIY Interior Clean & Protect.

Underrated, I also think rinse-less wash products excel at interior quick detailers. The beauty of a rinse-less wash here is that they clean well but leave a residue free finish across all surfaces, including screens and leather. I actually have ONR mixed up at the quick detailer ratio for this role. If you watch some of the DIY videos, they are often mentioning the use of rinse-less wash as an interior cleaner/detailer.

I have also used products like P&S Paint Gloss and Megs Last Touch on interiors in the past. Again, the idea being they are multi-surface safe and add some lovely scent into the interior. I also use Paint Gloss as an anti-static agent when vacuuming pet hair and sand from filthy carpets.
