Upon inspecting my car more closely, AFTER I bought it, I found that one of the grills had busted clips and was being held in place by tape. Started looking around at replacements and decided I was going to replace the chromes with blacks. At $80 + shipping, I decided to give PlastiDip a shot since it worked so well on my console.

Here it is -

Before (please excuse the road rash..)

After -

A little sanding, and 3 coats later they were done. Pleased once again, Plastidip has yet to let me down. Durability and ease of cleaning are yet to be determined, but worse case, I spring for the new ones.

Looks great! The Dr.Colorchip system would do wonders for all of those paint chips.

Thanks, and yes, about to order the kit. Going to recut/polish the hood and trunk and hit the rash with Colorchip. I discovered it on the site AFTER I finished my first cut/polish last week unfortunately.

That did make quite a difference! :props:

You can spray a clear coat over the Plasti-Dip to give it a shadow black look to it if you wanted to. :)

Interesting. Do you know of any pics online where I can check the look?

DO NOT DO THIS!!!! I have tried it on a few Bimmers and the PD discolors then starts peeling after a few weeks!!!!

keep us updated on the durability of paint...

So far on one of my buddy's Bimmers (1990 E30 M3) we "Shadow Lined" his car using Plasti Dip almost 8 months ago and it is still wearing well! No chips or scratches!

My Kidneys have been done for about 4 months and no chips or scratches and the rear Z3 emblem has been done for about 2 months and same no problems at all! The best thing about using PD is if you want to go back to the factory chrome (and haven't sanded just done something like an IPA cleaning) you just need to pick at one of the corners and peel off the PD!

So don't do it or do it?

I think he was advising against CC'ing over the Plastidip.

What do you think about exterior B pillars?? Mine are super faded, and I don't like the other options out there (stick ons, carbon fiber, gloss black etc). I'm tempted to do a PD restore on those as well.

PS - just finished the center console restore. The chewed up, ugly tan armrest/emergency boot area is now looking new in the awesome matte black.

Honestly on the B-Pillars I would sand them down a bit (you could even use some green Scotch Brite) then shoot them with Dupli-Color Trim Black paint... I love that stuff for restoring faded trim... Just make sure that you prep it properly and mask the whole side of the car to avoid any overspray...

The D-C TB is a satin black paint... My buddy that we did the M3 on wanted to be able to go back to chrome if he decided to sell it so PD it was as you just clean it with some degreaser then mask and shoot...If he wants to go back he can just rub it in a corner hard and peel it off...

Good stuff. I had been looking at this as a back up already. Only thing that had me leaning towards the PD was the forgiving nature of a screw up. Like you said, mess up or don't like it, its an easy peel and you're back to square one. I will go the D-P route this weekend. Thanks!
