Repainting my van's hood

To help you in your your sanding proccess you can add whats called a guide coat . That is a lite coat of different color primer on the top. Its really helps you see all the imperfectoions and sanding scratches that you will sand out.
I used the last of the primer that I had on hand getting the last coat on and was planning on getting another can or 2 after work today so this advice works out perfect. Great suggestion! I'll grab one red and one gray. Thanks a lot! :props:

Can't wait to see the outcome :dblthumb2:

As soon as I got home from work today I laid down a thin coat of red primer on the hood over the gray that I sprayed last night. If I can just get up from this chair I'm going to sand off the red and into the gray and all my low spots should remain red so I can easily see where I still need to fill. I'll be back in a few with pics of today's progress.

I have to say that I made quite a mess of this hood by using the 50 grit and rotary to grind off the original paint, rather my poor technique is what made the mess. I allowed the metal to get too hot in places by holding the tool in one place for too long (several places actually) now I have a lot of warped sections. I think this thing will get one more coat of primer and then sprayed white.

I used this meguiars sanding pad to do the sanding with 220 grit dry.

Here's what it looks like now after today's sanding.

OK, today when I got home from work, I shot a final coat of primer and then lightly sanded it 30 minutes later with 500 grit. I then pre cleaned it again with the prep-all and decided to just get some paint on this thing. I shot 2 cans worth of white paint on it in four individual coats giving about 20 minutes between coats. It actually doesn't look as bad as I thought it was going to. Here's a few pics.

My plan now is to let it dry until Thursday and then lightly sand it with 500 grit again before spraying two more cans on it the same way I did it today. That way there will be a nice thick build of paint on it so I can later (in maybe 2 weeks) wetsand it and buff it out.

Hey, where is the snow? It was warm enough outside today to paint? Is Etters PA on the Georgia border?

It was warm enough to paint, just not sure that it's warm enough for paint to dry. $5 says a cat walks across it before morning.

Sadly, I am willing to bet that hood is going to look better than the rest of the van by time you're done.

subscribed for sure. I'm looking forward to seeing how this turns out.

Heck, it looks good Dave. Keep it up man.
Thanks Tom.

To combat this phenomena I intentionally left a ding or 3 in the hood before painting. Thanks.

LOL! Punch the kitty in the throat!
The kitty must be scared of the "Jack Patrol" (see avitar) no paw prints this morning.

I'll let it dry today and tomorrow, shoot it again Thursday and put it back on the van on Sunday. Thanks.

@ Flash Gordon, I forgot to multi Quote your comment but thanks buddy.

Nice work Dave! Hood looks a hell of a lot better than it did.

Looks real good Dave...can't wait to see back on the van. Nice job :xyxthumbs:

Well, the hood is finally painted, wet sanded and polished. Of course no wax or sealant will be applied for about a month. Here's a few pics.

The guy with the Mazda Miata is supposedly coming over in the morning for a second try at the review detail that started all of this hood painting business. I'll get the hood back on the van then. Thanks for all the comments, advice and compliments.
