So I was polishing my wheels with my GG 3" and their orange pad, and I guess I got a little carried away and beat up the edge of the backing plate a little (because Chris, the Optimum adjutant, won't take on my cause of a MF DA polishing cone :p , to be known as the Setec--LOL). Anyway, I figured I'd better look into a spare BP since my friend Jr. really likes the 3" GG with the MF pads...and Autogeek doesn't sell a replacement BP, nor does Griot's direct.

The only thing AG has is the 3M & Meg's sanding backing plates with the interchangeable thread adapter pieces. The GG plate is 2-7/8" dia., I'm sure the info is around here somewhere what the 3M/Meg's plate dia. is, not sure about the upcoming Optimum 3" backing plate.

So, anyone replaced the BP on their GG 3"? AG staff, is the OEM plate available?

Don't have a GG3, but the diameter of the Meg's S3BP is 2-7/8" so presumably it would work.

Thanks, that seems a little pricey considering an LC BP for 4" pads is $12.99.

Just called Griot's and it's only $5!! Gotta be ordered by phone. Shoot, for that price I'll take 2!

Edit: Nick, any chance AG will carry the Griot's BP? Or an LC equivalent?

$5? That's a great price! Wonder what the thread size is?

The Griots # is 10739A for the 3" bp. The reason I know is I loaned my 3" machine out and the friend had to go to their Plainfield warehouse and purchase one after his dog ate mine.

Perhaps the most reasonably priced Griot's product ever? It's the standard DA backing plate thread.

Yes, that's the number they gave me. Now if we could just convince AG to carry it so we don't have to pay the Griot's shipping...oh wait, they have some shipping offer going on at GG.

I thnk the offer is free shipping over $25.

If you are looking for something cheap to add up to $25 and have old eyes like mine, they sell safety glasses with readers built in. I love them. I will order a few more next time I order.

Otherwise their green "spray on wash" MFs are really nice.

My new catalog says they are running a flat rate below that which is pretty attractive.

I was actually eyeing up the 3" glass polishing discs to go with my 3" BP...seems like it would be good for getting into the corners, although I don't thing the 3" GG has enough grunt to do much for glass. Hmm...maybe Griot's will run with my MF DA polishing cone idea!!

Griots has both 3" and 6" glass polishing disc. I have used my 3" polisher with good resuls on minor glass defects.

I have only used the 6inch glass discs. I agree the 3 is a little whimpy. I like it for some things like headlights and wheels. I use my old PC7424 for 3 in MF DA system.

Might keep in mind the Meg's bp does come with various adapters which is a plus.

At least you can call Griots and get the back plate. I once had a specialty tool that I needed a replacement part for and the company I purchased the tool from wouldn't sell me the piece I needed. They wanted me to purchase a whole new tool. I'm glad Griots stands behind their products and offers parts for them also

The Meg's back plate is another great option also

The GG backing plate has a lifetime guarantee from Griot's Garage.

The CS rep at Griot's said if I wanted a warranty replacement I'd have to go thru AG (where I bought the polisher), but mine is still ok (just a little ragged in one spot on the edge), I just don't have a spare like I have with most of my other backing plates.

The Griot's CS rep was right, AutoGeek covers it during their 30 day guarantee period and then Griot's takes over with their lifetime guarantee on non-consumable products only. AutoGeek will coordinate the return to Griot's for you.
