I'm a hobbyist and don't go through MF towels as fast as some of the guys who do this for a living so I tend to not have a big stack of demoted towels readily available for grunt work.

I think it would be awesome if Autogeek were to evaluate what's available and bring us some good quality cheap microfiber towels for these kinds of jobs.

I'm looking at you, backordered Mango Breeze!

Ideally, the price point would be close to competetive with what we can find locally at the discount stores or on Amazon but perahps with some professional testing and vetting done by the staff at AG so we know we're getting a solid product.

I'm thinking ~250-300 gsm, 75/25 or 80/20, 16x16 inch, colors that don't match the golds, greens, blues, etc of the ones we use on paint, and maybe sacrificing the rolled or silk/satin edging it it means dropping well under the $2.00/towel range.

Color-wise I'd simply like something that I can see the level of dirt on so I know when it's time to wash it. Black makes that hard if you've got a lightly used towel next to a destroyed one and want to do a quick wipe of something.

Is it just me? Are y'all shopping elsewhere for these?

For mf's...yes.
I personally feel that these are bread and butter items for AG...erroneous, or not.
AG (and other online car care sites) will not compete with the real mf players.

Revised question:

If AG carried something of good quality for a competetive price, would you still go elsewhere?

I haven't bought any MF's to speak of for a long time. So no, I wouldn't go elsewhere because I don't need any towels (because I bought way too many back when I was buying them). I used to buy towels here and at ACC when they were on BOGO, because that was usually a good deal, but now they limit you to 4 on the BOGO, so it's hard to stock up.

As VT alluded to, MF's can be a high markup item, so it's kind of a slippery slope here.

I use AG and another supplier for my microfibers, located here by me in So Cal. AG when they're on BOGO it's a no brainer for their towels, but the other supplier I use, they also have great deals, and very similar mf's to AG's. Honestly, I purchased a bunch, and with using a dedicated MF wash like Pinnacle or Blackfire, I have had the towels a while now and theyre just like new. If you stock up on some quality ones, good wash habits can make them last a real long while, hopefulyl then cutting down on the amount you'd spend in the long run on towels.....

I have opt that CG MF is the cheapest/bulk to go.
They average about 12$ for a dozen for the 16x16

But when AG has their MF on BOGO , i still pick some up, because they are a TINY BIT better quaility than CG IMO.

And i just received my witchgreen MF towel that was on BOGO last week, they are some GREAT TOWELS.

i wish i bought more when it was on BOGO.

I was able to stock up on since quality ones a little while ago w/ the VIP deal. So it's good to jump on a deal when it presents itself. But for the grunt work you're talking about I would pick up a package from Costco, or a similar store. I got a 36 pack for real cheap. They are a medium grade towel, 16 x 16 and yellow in color.

So you should pick what will work for your cars. If you've got show cars, then splurge and buy the best. If it's your DD, then save some money and mix n match where you buy your mf towels.

I agree. I only bought one 3-pack (so ended up getting 6 towels total), but wish I had picked up at least one more 3-pack to get me 12 towels total. Oh well, maybe they will go on special again. If they do, I will certainly pick some more up!

I bought a 24 (maybe 36) pack of microfiber towels from Sam's Club for about 11 bucks for those type of jobs.

I picked up a bundle of generics from HD for wheels and exhaust pipes and they were cheap, for sure. Like under 50 cents each cheap.

But ... they just don't seem like something I'd want to use on door jambs and my interior I guess.

Cotton.
Doesn't make me a better detailer, just makes me - ME. :)

The way that I lok at the mf issue is that if you're just doing personal cars, why not just get the best that AG offers? Let them do the research and testing and you reap the benefits. Take care of your mf's and they will last.

The AG store link that I inserted above gives one a guideline when seeking the best towels - minus factors such as edging, and stitching materials. Not all online vendors are as detailed in presentation of product description as AG.

If you're doing production style details, mainly aio's, then top end towels need to be a factor in your package pricing.

Get your prices up, your market set, and the towel issue should not be a concern.

:iagree: When doing higher end work, I use all brand new towels for the finishing polish and sealant wipe off steps. New towels every car every time, and the price of the work covers the cost of all materials including new towels.

I'm a hobbyist too. I got some black towels from AG, probably on a BOGO, for wheels and running boards. For door jambs, I use the cheapie towels I got at home centers/discount stores.

Wal-Mart has some Microtex "detailers" towels in a 2-pack that aren't bad. But to bring the thread back around to the first post--why is it that AG's "economy" towel, the Mango Breeze, has been on backorder for so long? If it was available perhaps this thread wouldn't even have been started.

y8s, this is what you need. Costco - 36 pack for $15.49. Are they as plush as AG's? No, but they are far better than shop towels, and cheaper too. $.43 per towel with these yellow ones. Hope this points you in the direction you wanted.
