Detailer’s Review: Detailer’s Paint Coating & Detailer’s Coating Prep Polish



So I'm trying to wash Stacy's Honda and mark it off my Honeydoo List so I can move onto some fun stuff like my truck or the old yellow 2-door Ford pigging up the studio and then Nick hands me a couple of new products.

I wasn't going to wax Stacy's Honda because I really wanted to clean my truck tires and apply the Tuf Shine Clear Coat to to them but ah what the heck...

I washed it first thing this morning, you can see that here, note the fun projects in the background...


Tornador Air Foamer & IronX Snow Foam

Clay, Prep & Seal - Easy as 1, 2, 3
After drying her Honda off I felt the paint using the Baggie Test and it needed to be clayed so I did that with Pinnacle Ultra Poly Clay and Pinnacle Clay Lube.

Detailer's Coating Prep Polish
I machine buffed the paint using a 5.5" LC White Polishing Pad and the Detailer's Coating Prep Polish. The "blackness" on the pad is because at the very end I ran the polisher over the side mirrors and also buffed the hard, black plastic. I also ran the polisher over all the glass and even the headlights. The car was so dang surgically clean after the Iron X Snow Foam I figures a little machine polishing could only help to really get these areas even more surgically clean.

Easy Wipe-Off
I applied to the entire car at one time as I figured this would tell me if it's hard to wipe-off or not and it actually wiped off real easy. If you want it to be even easier, wipe residue off after each panel.

Detailer’s Paint Coating
I'm going to hand apply using these soft gold finger pockets but first I put on a black Nitrile Glove, always add a fresh box of these to your orders, always good to have them on hand. (No pun intended).

It's always a challenge to capture the spray coming out of the nozzle...

Spreading the product out and working it over the paint...

Going to spread it over the grill and the Honda plastic chrome emblem... make it shine!

Gentle Wipe to each panel after application
Wiping any excess residue off before it hardens, most people call "excess residue" High Points. I like the words excess residue better.

Car is coated
This took me about 2 hours from claying, to final wipe-off of the coating, not bad at all...

Lazy man's way...
The black plastic surrounding the painted mirror is also coated. Not sure if it's meant for that but I was being lazy and coated pretty much everything but the glass.

Aging well...
Very glassy looking... this is a 2004 by the way, so this car is 9 years old, going on 10 years old and is parked outside most of it's life.

I think Stacy will like this...

Who says silver doesn't reflect well? :dunno:

I'm hoping she'll love the way it looks and make me a fresh batch of Habanero Hot Sauce, Recipe #5.

WOW that silver is popping Mike! It's extremely glossy and has good reflections. :xyxthumbs: The car definitely doesn't show it's age. I'm sure Stacy is very thankful that you're taking care of her car.

Is the car swirl free?

Are you planning to do a water test and a long term test?

This is also my question... What's the right product to apply to the trim (either plastic, rubber or chrome). I assume the paint coating will work but I just want some confirmation.

Hello Mike, what is the pc speed and your hand speed when you use the paint prep polish?

Did you use 1-2 spray per panel to cover the whole accord?

I'm sure Stacy will be thrilled with the way it looks.

She loved it! Even though it's just a silver metallic 4-door Honda it's paid for and incredibly dependable and trouble-free. But yes, when I showed her the new coating results on the paint she was blown away.

I also detailed the interior, the engine compartment and dressed all the exterior black plastic trim AND sealed the tires with Tuf Shine Clear Coat Tire Coating.

We're going to sell this in the fall as she wants a Jeep, not just any Jeep, she wants one with all the good stuff, Chevy running gear, modified suspension, big tires, etc. I'm down with that.

I used the 5.0 setting on the Porter Cable with a 5.5" LC White Flat Polishing Pad. I forget what I used last on her car but I think it was OCW. Here's the last time I waxed it. (washed it a number of times but never re-waxed it)

Yes. I'm a huge believer in NOT using dry applicator pads by machine or by hand on paint in excellent condition so I primed my applicator pad FIRST and then used the dampened pad to spread out two sprays per panel.

One Gold Finger Pocket. I used both sides and that's because one side turned pretty black when I rubbed out the plastic trim on the driver's side mirror and I didn't want to use that side on paint any longer. Had I been more careful and only coated the "paint" I could have used just one side.

I didn't measure by weighing, I guess I could of but I didn't. It is like applying Opti-Coat II, possibly easier since it's a spray instead of a syringe.

I think somewhere on this forum I showed pouring the pouring Opti-Coat II into a spray bottle and applying it as a spray as I think this works better. The thing about Opti-Coat II is you could never leave it in a spray bottle as it's not air-tight enough.

Both work well. I think this spray on kind of bubba-proofs the application a little for people new to coatings.

I machine buffed her car about a year ago and it's only been carefully hand washed since then like I explain in my how-to book on the chapter on washing aggressively and washing carefully and when to do which type.

Yes, very happy and I like keeping her car clean and shiny anyways as I drive it anytime we take a long distance trip as my truck gets like 8-9 miles per gallon.

I have not used the glass coating on her window yet. I machine buffed all the beach sand scratches out of the windshield about a year ago and I see some creeping back in, (dang ocean).

But I will, I just ran out of time as I was multi-tasking on three cars over the weekend, besides her car I also cleaned and polished the tires on a 1932 Ford Phaeton and machine scrubbed and polished the tires on my own truck. You can see them here,

working on three cars in one day, much of the outside work in the rain was a good workout. Detailing helps keep you in shape, a secondary benefit to the hobby or business depending on you.

Water beading

Next morning I took this pictures, had just our normal morning rain...

Drove her car to work, most of the rain blew off, what was left I wiped off with a microfiber towel and then dressed tires with Tuf Shine Tire Clear Coat for the finishing touch on her car.

Just got my bottle of DP coating in.

I polished the Jeep about two weeks ago and then put Meg's Ultimate paste on her.

Would just a wash be enough prep prior to the application of DPC?

Should I go further and do an alcohol wipe?

An IPA wipe is the minimum I would do (after washing)...it would be best to use some sort of product like the DP coating prep polish...that's what it's for. But if you have fresh LSP on there it's going to have to come off if you want any coating to adhere.

Yep.

As a minimum I would use the DP coating prep polish and then do an IPA wipe to make sure the paint is squeaky clean. You don't want anything on the surface prior to applying the DP paint coating.

Mike, great job coating the Honda. I've got a question about the new DP Paint Coating. Does this product have a shelf life? One of my complaints about the other coatings on the market is that you pretty much need to throw away any excess after the first use because oxygen exposure ruins them. If you get a door ding or something and need to to a spot correction, you need a brand new bottle of most of the coatings on the market.

Can DP Paint Coating be kept on the shelf and used at a future time?

This is my first time trying a coating. So far I like it. We'll see how it hold's up.
