I generally pay 10-14 bux for touchup from the dealership, but they don't match as well.

Nice review Garry. I'm anxoius to try this Dr Colorchip sometime. The paint store I buy from sells pints as their minumum purchase, so the price should be about the same.

How much does the Dr Colorchip system cost?

It's on AGs website.

Correct. The paint isn't cheap, but the system works well and the paint matches very well.

Great review. Have been a Dr. Color Chip user before AG carried it. I started using it because of the frustration of stone chips hitting the front-bumper area. When I started it was my (cheap) attempt to fix the problem without having a full paint job done. It works. In fact my wife just mentioned that hers is starting to show some wear. It need help. IMO is not perfect but fixes the problem, which I can live with.

Thanks, Mike. Perfection, realistically, is few and far between, but the system does work well.

I have used Dr.Colorchip on both my cars with excellent results. Colors matched perfectly. I had a bad rock chip on the front of my hood down to metal. You have to look hard to find the divot. Two thumbs up for me.

I agree. Good stuff! The colors match well also!

How does this work on scratches? wondering if a long scratch would be filled in by this. Im thinking of trying this but if anyone else has done it that would be awesome to find out!

It works great on scratches if they are past paint and clearcoat. Just remember it is a repair and you will be pleased with the results.

I would suggest Langka. I have had very good success. The key for me is a very good (small) brush and laquer thinner. Keep the brush clean and only use just enough paint to fill the chip. With practice you'll develop your own techniques.

Have you tried the Dr.Colorchip system?

I haven't used the system, but it seems to work well as all touch up products use the same process but at a different cost. However, I'm unsure how a comparable $50 kit is any different then buying from my volvo online dealership: volvo touch up kit that comes with a paint bottle (9ml), a separate clearcoat bottle (9ml), and can purchase at same website "touch up magic (blob remover)" which is the same type of product used in step 2 in the video for a total of $20 bucks for everything. And if you want to have the fine tip brush ($5) or MF applicators ($9) (about 30 reusable ones come in case) you can buy those off of Langka website, still putting all the same necessary tools for about $30. Something to think about and check with your car make online dealership (via google - for any volvo owners, mazda, lexus, lincoln mercury, ford..tascaparts.com).

Langka steps, which doesn't include touch up paint ($40):
The original LANGKA "The Blob Eliminator" (2oz)
PREPAINT (2oz) for cleaning the chips prior to applying touch up paint
Paint Sealant (2oz) to protect and seal the finished repair
MicroBrush (3) a unique tool for applying touch up paint.
Plastic Squeegie Card (1) a unique card used in this process
Microfibre Cloth (1) for wrapping around the plastic card

vs. Online Dealership products and/or your own products ($30)
Touch up Magic (blob eliminator) about ($7)
Pre Paint (alcohol can be used to clean chip)
Paint Sealant (clear coat included in volvo kit) + Touch up Paint (total for both $13-$14) - both come in a nail polish type bottle/brush
Microbrush (can purchase seperately on langka site or any art supply store) ($9)
Plastic Card (can use any old credit card or rubber razor)
or
Microfiber cloth (there is one round cloth on top of the touch up paint bottle to smooth out paint)

vs. Dr Color Chip (comparable $50 kit)
Standard Touch-Up Paint Kit:
1/2 oz custom OEM match paint
2oz SealAct™ blending solution
1 microfiber towel
1 ultra paint brush
2 micro brushes
1 nitrile glove
1 white blending cloth
Instruction sheet

..you decide.

Nice don, you pretty much gave out 3 options.... And nice video gary, drchip is something i would consider to fix my chips on bumpers...

Garry,

Just curious, could one apply a little clearcoat on top of a chip repair with DR Colorchip? rpb

I know that I'm replying to an older post, but since the thread has already been bumped...

I was never happy with the results I got from Langka. There was a ton of road construction around here in the summer of '09 when my car was new. Murphy's Law + being too strapped for time to just fall way back behind the hazards meant I picked up a lot of rock chips on my hood  If I had known, I would have just clearbra'd the whole front. Anyways, Langka was too much work for too too little result. Redoing a couple chips several times to try to get better results didn't pan out for me, and I started to worry about that blob remover on my nice, new factory clear. The only thing I got was my Langka touch ups don't pop out when I wash my car. But the look wasn't superior for me compared to just taking half a minute to dab some touch up in the chip and calling it a day. I don't mind the regular touch ups popping out after a wash because they are mediocre looking coverups at best, and they take seconds to redo. There's always the hope that I'll learn the skill, and have and take the time to do the repair right. I never could get those Langka blobs to level out smooth.

Dr. Colorchip seems the same to me as Langka except that Dr. Colorchip supplies the touch-up paint which is allegedly designed to work with their blending solution. Langka's "blob remover" solution is supposed to work with any factory touch up paint. It sounds like Dr. Colorchip's solution has the potential to work better, and if so it would be great for somebody where time is of the essence or where time=dollars in equals quality out. I think that's pretty much what Garry Dean is saying. For my car, I'd prefer a repair good enough to fool me into forgetting that the chip happened, even when I wash and dry my car. I suspect that the time it would take me to succeed with such a repair would exceed the cost of just getting a respray. My dilemma is that a respray = bye bye factory paint.

Option 4: Has anybody ever checked these guys out: Automotivetouchup.com Touch Up Paint, Aerosol Spray Paint and Touchup Paint Accessories | AutomotiveTouchup | 888-710-5192 ? They seem to have a pretty complete range from beginner to intermediate+ that's easily accessible to the DIYer. The only thing they're missing is the catalyzed aerosol clear I've been hearing about. But they do sell 1 and 2 part clear's that can be mixed up and sprayed.
