Review - Jay Leno’s Garage Quick Detailer

I want to compare it side by side with adams since I have a high sneaky suspicion it's the same stuff with a different scent

Stay tuned...

What is the collective wisdom of everyone on how dirty is too dirty for a quick detailer?

:)

I'd say lightly soiled is far as I would be willing to go with a QD. I have washed an entire car before with QD using it as a waterless wash basically. I erred on the side of caution and used a lot of product to get the job done. I didn't notice any swirling or other issues after, so the product worked out ok for me. The only downside I saw to using it was that it wasn't very economical versus using a waterless or rinseless wash.

Being a quick detailer, I am going to say the polymers are probably not that durable. More like a short quick boost to give the paint gloss and slickness in between washes.

There's at least one QD I've tried as a stand-alone product on paint with no lsp that lasted a few weeks with very strong beading.

IMO this is too dirty for a quik detailer, and should be done with a liberal spraying of waterless wash.

(in response to Mike P's question on "too dirty for a QD)

To me, if you can see dirt, the car's to dirty for a "dry" quick detailer.

How about dust?

Dust from what? There's lots of different dust, some are powdery, and some are "scratchery". Here in Alabama, we get light dust, and then we get red clay dust from farming. The red dust is some bad stuff! I would wash first in this instance, then use the detailer. (ask me how I know!)

You are a top notch detailer, what is your opinion? I'm just an amateur weekender.

Thanks,
Bill

Thanks for the kind words.. Now scratchery dust aside, when it comes to normL daily common dust, I don't see a reason to shy away from using a quik detailer for its intended purpose.

I just spent the past few minutes outside doing exactly that, and I took a few pictures.

I hadn't touched the paint on my car since Wednesday morning, so this is 3 days worth of driving and parking outside. I have no hesitation using a quik detailer in this situation.

Note: This is where technique comes into play.
Also, keep this in mind: If it was a beater, you wouldn't be worried at all and would most likely produce flawless results without swirling up the paint.

On the other hand, being cautious to a fault can quikly lead to disaster.. IMO it's much better to leave fear behind and just do the dew and use the quik detailer/waterless wash as intended and not be worried..

Onto the pics:

Here's where good technique aka common sense comes into play to help out. Use enough product. Leave your cheapo elsewhere while doing this, or else. Lol.

Here's me being borderline overly cautious. I don't normally completely stop after just 1 swipe. IMHO that behavior is living in fear, and I don't fear scratching my paint... But I suppose alot of people stop after each swipe?

I seriously felt like I was asking for trouble being this cautious. I don't normally wipe my car down like this... IMO this is what being careful to a fault looks like... Why? Because for every new side you turn that towel, what do you have? A dry towel that's what.

I feel like I just survived through a hood of landmines. I truly believe that less stopping and less unnecessary flipping would've produced a better experience and less risk. I believe that's a big reason alot of people fail at waterless washing.

Fear leads to bad technique. Just my 2 cents. Thx for reading.
