Review: Mothers Wheel Cleaning Brush

A good wheel cleaning brush makes cleaning your wheels faster with better results. Lets take a look at the Mothers Wheel Brush.

How_To_Clean_Wheels_021.jpg

There's a rubber bumper surrounding the head of the brush to prevent scratching or damaging your wheels.

The handle has raised round dimples which makes gripping it a lot easier when the handle gets wet. This works really well.

The bristles are 2" long providing plenty of length to reach all the inner portions of any wheel design.

The bristles are also flagged at the end to make them more gentle to delicate wheel surfaces while also improving cleaning ability for uneven or textured surfaces.

The handle is 6" long making it perfect for giving you good control over the bristles without tiring your arm muscles and also providing plenty of reach.

There's a hole in the end of the handle so you can hang it on a peg or nail after use to drip dry.

Now let's take a look at this brush in action...

How_To_Clean_Wheels_003.jpg

First I wet the wheel to rinse off any loose dirt, road grime or brake dust...

How_To_Clean_Wheels_001.jpg

Next I spray on some wheel cleaner, in this case I'm using Wolfgang Uber Wheel Cleaner which not only does a great job of cleaning wheels but also dissolves iron particles...

Spraying Uber Wheel Cleaner over entire face of wheel...

While there's no iron particles on the face of this wheel, (that's a good thing), you can see how the product works as it reacts with the steel around the lug nuts...

How_To_Clean_Wheels_006.jpg

If there had been any iron particles embedded in the paint used to seal these wheels you would have seen the bleeding effect.

Now work the brush over all the different sections of the wheel...

After using the Mothers Wheel Brush to clean the face of the wheel I then used a Daytona Speedmaster Wheel Brush to get behind the spokes and the barrel of the back of the wheel.

After thoroughly brushing the front and back it's time for a strong blast of water to rinse off all the grime...

This is a black microfiber towel for drying wheels and tires, the big idea is because it's black it won't show black stains common from wiping tires but more importantly it's a visual reminder to you to only use your black microfiber towels on wheels and tires and not your car's paint.

And there you go... a spotlessly clean wheel and tires.

Very nice write up with detailed pictures and description to go along with it Mike. Fantastic review.

I have the complete Mothers Wheel and tire lineup of brushes along with the full size daytona brush and this is an excellent setup of brushes to tackle almost anything that comes your way.

The bristles are made of nylon right? How would you compare that to boars hair brushes?

Playing devil advocate here as I have a mothers wheel brush but curious to hear what you say.

Couldn't have said it better myself...

I clicked on the link I provided above, this one...

Mothers Wheel Brush

And read the copy and it didn't state the type of material the bristles are made of, my guess is they are probably nylon or something similar that's man-made.

As for comparing this brush to the Boar's Hair brush which I really like one is made from natural fibers, actually the hair off a pig and the other is synthetic. Another difference is the boar's hairs are much softer and a LOT less stiff, especially when you get them wet and this makes them a LOT more gentle to any surface but reduces their aggressiveness ability to "scrub".

There's also a large price difference between these two brushes.

What do you advocate about the Mother's brush?

The Mothers brush is a very good brush and will suit most peoples needs. I know I like it. If I owned wheels that are,

  • Expensive
  • Have a delicate or easily scratched surface
  • Have a complex, intricate and hard to clean design
Then I would definitely get the Montana Boar's Hair Brush like this one,

8 inch Montana Original Boar’s Hair Wheel Brush

A well rounded arsenal of detailing tools would include one of each, maybe even two of each as brushes do wear out from use.

:D

If you look on page 28 of my new book I recommend a number of brushes including the 8" Boar's Hair Brush for cleaning the face of wheels and the Mothers Tire and Fenderwell Brushes for cleaning tires and fenderwells.

That's not to be taken that I don't recommend the Mothers Wheel Brush but when writing a book you can't realistically list every brush known to man let along every brush available at Autogeek, so I chose a good selection to get the reader started down the right path and then each person, with a little research, can figure out what works best for their wheels and their budget.

IF you have a copy of my book, read page 28 and look at the pictures, you'll see the above mentioned brushes.

If you don't have a copy of my book, here's the link to get one, it's a great resource for learning more about detailing cars...

Mothers has been offering great detailing products for decades. I have the longer version of the wheel brush but it does allow me to clean the exterior of the wheels without bending over or squatting down...

It's tough to beat this wheel care combination....:props:

I bought 4 mothers weel well brushes for a teen center car wash, I might just want to buy the set as it does a good job and they are built well

I love this wheel brush, I use it all the time even before I got daytona speed brush.
Daytona has really good brushes as well.

I'm In!

The synthetic bristles are softer than I expected.

My gal said rubbing the bristles on the wheelwell brush "this would make a great back washer in the shower!"

No you can't have it :D
