Review: Son1c wax Protowax 112 (black wax)

I was one of the lucky individuals to get The latest of Drew's protowaxes to test out. In return, I agreed to provide reviews of the products. I will try to keep this as objective as I can.

Okey Dokey Drew, don't cure excessively.

Upon opening I see a somewhat matte finish on the wax and I'm hit with what I would describe as a floral/herbal fragrance. After swiping my finger across the wax once it easily melted to a wonderful consistency and the gloss was clearly evident. Most definitely a soft wax, but no so far as wolfgang fusion. It has a very smooth texture, not the slightest bit grainy.

I tried a few different applications as noted below, the subject being a 1990 Audi V8 Quattro in Panther Black Metallic. This car has a ton of silver flake with a hint of darker green tones. tempurature was 65F and humidity was 20% with work done in the shade of the garage. The vehicle was initially cleaned with UWW+ as prespray and ONR using the GDWM.

First up was a wipe on, wipe off method. I did 1/6th of the hood and wiped off immediately. Initially with a medium nap towel that was a little too grabby, so I switched to a very short nap that cut through the wax well. I followed with a longer nap eagle edgeless for final buff. The wax buffed off with some slight haze/ghosting and was easily removed by the eagle edgeless. I suspect this was partially from the thick application to prime the applicator and partially from the very short cure. The finish lacked a bit of slickness, but the look was outstanding.

Next was working 1/2 of the hood, this was better. Less haze/ghosting, but still needed a bit more time. I did the rest of the hood and waited a minute of two while I packed up the wash equipment. Wipe off was better yet. So I got a little brave and applied to a small section of the bumper and let that sit while doing the rest of the car.

Back to the testing. Next I worked half the roof and the trunk. I felt this was pretty good and continued with the 2 panel approach. for the top and drivers side. I do feel like the slickness suffered a bit with this method, but much better than immediate removal.

Naxt, I did the entire passenger side of the car in one shot and went back to wipe it off. Wipe off was still very easy, I may even say easier after I waited that amount of time. No ghosting and the short nap cut through much better now that the wax had set-up a bit more.

Finally, I went back to the section of the bumper I had done very early on (right after the hood). It did still wipe off easily, slickness and gloss were both very good. I used about 1/3-1/2 of the container that was provided, which I feel was a leaning toward over application, but it still perform very well.


The car had previously been coated in PBL v2, so that is difficult to compete with for slickness, but the paint looked dripping wet. Even reflections looked dripping wet as you'll see below. I'm very pleased with this wax. It was relatively easy to work with, has great texture, the fragrance was pleasant though not my personal favorite, the look was outstanding and dripping wet.

The few criticisms I have would be that the slickness is less than what I typically expect from a partially synthetic product, The ghosting with immediately wipe off was annoying though easily resolved with an additional wipe or slightly longer cure. I would have liked a little more flake pop, but that may just be this particular flake, it has never jumped off the paint with any product.

A few questions remain. Will the immediate wipe off prove to reduce the longevity of the wax? Should I have left it to haze longer and would that dramatically affect the slickness and gloss? How long is too long for curing? Will this really last 3-6 months?

Hopefully I'll have a chance to answer these questions with a future application. One on a car that sees the real use and can better testify to longevity. This particular Audi was able to show the dramatic gloss and wetness that Protowax 112 offers.

On to the pics. Note that these are 'as shot' with a variety of lenses, no edits made so tone, highlights, shadows and other characteristics may be way off, but it represents what the camera saw.

Flake is good, but not outstanding. COuldn't get anything closer as I forgot my remote shutter release and didn't think to use the timer. The area around the handle insert is actually a reflection and flaking paint, not residual polish or wax.




There two are the jewels. Paint so wet it makes the reflections look wet (might be a new standard of measurement). Also note the white AAA suv is a reflection on my car being reflected off the subject.





 
Hey Bob! Thanks for compiling this extensive review, I was able to introduce some ghosting as you had stated so it'll be back to the lab with this one again. Also for the record this is not part of the black wax development, this wax is actually an extremely dark green!
 
Thanks for clarifying Drew. That is a very dark green! Perhaps the Admins can edit the post to correct my error.

All-in-all I'm very pleased with it.
