Review: Wolfgang PROFI Ceramic Coating

Deep thoughts (By Jack Handy) on car wax with (improvements) by Mike Phillips

Sorry Mike, but I can't hear "Deep Thoughts" without remembering early '90's Saturday Night Live. Lol

That's a "new" topic of confusion - there's no need to top a coating... unless you're using,

  1. Coating Wash
  2. Coating Detailer
  3. Coating Booster

If you apply things like waxes or sealants - you lose the characteristics of the coating and gain the characteristics of the topper, which usually means "less" positive features. Thus you defeat the original purpose of installing the coating.

I think this is a really important point most people who are new to coatings miss. You don't HAVE to do ANYTHING special to a coating to get the maximum life from it. Keep the vehicle clean with a gloss-agent free shampoo and it will look great and perform as advertised. I've seen this on at least three different coatings I've tried.

Using products designed for coatings may improve the experience and possibly improve durability...or scratch your itch when you want to spray something on the paint.

Exactly.

I think one of the "issues" is for so long in the car detailing world, both the enthusiast side and the pro aspect, it's been ingrained in the brain to "layer" something onto the initial "thing".

Layering - brought to you by Zaino circa 2002

I know from experience, after washing and rinsing you'll get a better looking finish to apply something versus do nothing.

The "something" can be a drying aid or a complimentary spray-on product like I listed above.

I know I do this and see a difference.

Curious with this ceramic coating or any other brand.
At the end of the lifetime of the coating, 2 or 3 years, because the coating bonds to the clear coat does it degrade or do damage to the clear coat.?
Or when you compound it to remove what coating is remaining and make a clean surface, does it just remove a slight amount of clear coat?
Not sure I said it correctly.

I used another brand clear coat a bout a year ago and curious what the next step will be when that one has broken down and needs to be redone.

Thanks
Dave

Not that I've ever heard of or seen anyone document.

Yes.

Down the road when you polish the paint, be it with a compound, a polish or even a one-step cleaner/wax, you will remove what's left of the coating and also re-perfect the paint under it.

What do you normally do for

Tool?
Pad?
Paint correction products?

Use these, then move on to the next step.

Is this ok, and/or recommended for use on glass? I just received my bottle yesterday and am looking forward to getting it applied.

I usually use the paint coatings on side glass. For windshield I prefer to use dedicated glass coating because of the wiper. Regular coatings can make the wiper skip and it will be annoying.

I've been clearing up confusion about "glazes" for almost 20 years.

You want me to post a list of just my articles on this topic?

I could probably do a Skynet search and pull up most of my posts on the confusion.

LOL! Mike!
I didn't state my question correctly. What product, Wolfgang or not, can be used as a maintenance product for this coating.

So, what topping will play nice with this new coating?

LOL! Mike!

I didn't state my question correctly.

Copy that.

When I saw the word topping my mind went to a wax or sealant type product, not a spray-on maintenance product.

As for a maintenance product, just about any product formulated to be a coating detailer or a coating booster would work.

:)

I don’t do a ton of coating jobs as I tend to prefer traditional paste waxes.

I have a client looking for a quality coating in the upcoming weeks. After reading this review and having a HIGH level of trust in your reviews, Mike, I ordered this tonight for the job. I typically will not use a product like this without some personal testing but again I trust your reviews.

This product peaked my interest in a few of your comments. Durability, ease of use, water spot resistance and volume in bottle(I’ll be doing a full size 4 door pick up)

Looking forward to trying this out. Also I will be able to keep a close eye on it over time as I do all maintenance on this clients vehicles.

Thanks for the well written and documented review!

Copy that. I prefer to do production detailing using a great one-step cleaner/wax myself - the problem is customer demand for coatings. :)

It's a really nice ceramic coating and I'm confident both you and the customer will love it.

Sadly I ordered this last Wednesday and it’s still out of stock. Had to cancel my order as it won’t make it here in time. Was looking forward to some durability testing as I see this vehicle often.

Not to get too far off topic, but I wonder if the logistics world is still not quite back to normal. I had a job lined up to apply CQuartz UK on a neighbors vehicle. They ordered it from PBMG's other site and it too has been on back order for several weeks.

I don't run a business, so I can be patient. It just shows distribution and maybe even production isn't back to normal. In my case it might be a blessing too as I won't have to try and apply a coating in the full heat of summer!

Sorry to hear this.

I had know idea we we're out of stock?

My guess is if it's out of stock - we must have sold a boat load of it.

:dunno:

It happens and with current conditions, it’s understandable.

While it may be too late for this detail you have coming up, if you send me your shipping address I'll send you my bottle of PROFI. There's enough to do a normal size passenger car.

:)

Thank you so much Mike but it not necessary. I’ll order a bottle when the time is right. I don’t want to accept something and possibly not use it while you could have.

THANK YOU so much for the offer. It is truly appreciated!

I got a chance to use this product last night. Other than the bootcamp, this is the first ceramic coating I've applied myself. The application and removal was very user friendly. I did have a couple questions.

1. When watching for the coating to flash I noticed it almost looked to flash almost immediately after application. Almost instantly started having the rainbow effect. I did wait about 30-45 seconds to remove it. Does this sound right as for the coating flashing very soon?

2. Checking the coating this morning. It seems to be tacky or sticky Is this how the coating should be or will it harden up after awhile?

Thanks!

Coatings generally can be a bit tacky. It's because of how they produce the hydrophobic qualities of them. Generally it's not because the coating is super smooth and flat, but rather that there's microscopic levels of tiny "spikes" if you will.
