The local sports station I listen to from Detroit, 105.1, broke the news about 45 minutes ago. He was 88 years old. He played for the Red Wings from 1947-71 and then in the WHL till 1980, he was 52 when he officially retired.
The "Great One" took his number 99 in honor of Mr. Hockey's own #9. Then there's the "Gordie Howe Hatrick", a goal, an assist and a fight, how awesome is that!
In a week where we lost Ali, the icon of his sport, today we lost Gordie Howe, the icon of his sport!
