The local sports station I listen to from Detroit, 105.1, broke the news about 45 minutes ago. He was 88 years old. He played for the Red Wings from 1947-71 and then in the WHL till 1980, he was 52 when he officially retired.

The "Great One" took his number 99 in honor of Mr. Hockey's own #9. Then there's the "Gordie Howe Hatrick", a goal, an assist and a fight, how awesome is that!

In a week where we lost Ali, the icon of his sport, today we lost Gordie Howe, the icon of his sport!

RIP GORDIE HOWE

If there's anyone out there that may have met him or has a story to share it would be great because he played well before my time. That said growing up in Detroit I understand how much of an immense loss this is for our community.

Sad news indeed. The death of a legend. I'm not from Detroit but from Québec, Canada. So hockey is like a religion here.

He played in the World Hockey Association (WHA) not the WHL. The Western Hockey League is a Canadian Jr league. :) Mr. Hockey will be missed, I have an autographed pic of him down in the man cave.
