Road film is hard to remove, need help?

This is not road film or traffic film.

First - as the name implies, road film is an oily, dirty film that builds-up and impacts ONTO the exterior of the car where the rain water on the road, mixed with all the drippings from cars that drive on the road, would then be sprayed onto your car by the cars in front of you.

It is some type of film and the first way you would remove this type of film is to abrade it using one of these,

  • Polish
  • AIO
  • Compound


Even if a solvent or some sort, for example an APC would and could remove it - the paint would be dull and ugly. If you use a quality abrasive you'll remove it and leave the paint clear and pretty.

Above all else - if you're going to try to have a detail "business", which I think that's what you're trying to do? You MUST have a GREAT one-step cleaner/wax in your arsenal.


I don't just cover this topic in my classes I EXHAUST this topic in my classes. If I ever get down to Texas again for a Roadshow Class you should do everything you can to take it. You'll learn more in 2 days than 20 years.

Because of the location and the pattern I see in the picture - my guess is factory overspray?

See the area where there's no film along the edge? See how it's fairly uniform? As though it was covered over?

Just a guess, but looks like it could be some kind of clearcoat dry spray or overspray either from the factory or from a repaint due to collision work.

Hard to imagine how it could have been some kind of "liquid" that got onto the paint in the pattern I see.
