About 3 weeks ago I detailed my 2011 Ford Edge using: 1) clay bar; 2) XMT Intermediate Swirl Remover; 3) XMT 360; 4) Wolfgang Deep Gloss Paint Sealant; 5) Signature II Carnauba Wax.
From the clay bar forwards I had silky smooth paint. Results were very nice. I have gone over entire car 3 times since with instant detailer or DP waterless wash concentrate. Paint (hood in particular) now feels and sounds sandy already. I haven't got it wet. Just dry dust which I remove. Here in SE Washington you can visibly write your name in dust within 2 hours of cleaning a surface. I let the sealant cure for nearly 24 hours before waxing. Shouldn't the sealing and waxing keep dust from bonding with your paint for longer than 3 weeks? The dust here is bad though, and has a fair amount of silica (broken glass).

Some dust can be pretty tough on finishes and will tend to bake onto the surface. Also in dusty times of year I find that nubas like SSII tend to hold onto dust more than just a sealant alone. So maybe for the dusty times of year try just a sealant and skip the nuba. Maybe try a traditional wash as I feel that that is the best method for maintenence cleaning of paintwork!

Is it possible it might be environmental or construction fallout?

I had something similar happen to my old car. Was as smooth as could be, then one day I ran my finger across the hood and it felt rough.

It turned out to be overspray from....something. It was all over the car (even the glass) but once I clayed it all came off. The "mist" was so fine you couldnt even tell it was on the paint from looking at it, but you could feel it.

Might need a full wash in where you let suds break down the contaminants. Very well may have been that they could have have cured/dried with the wax or sealant and if so will need to be clayed.
I've also found in areas of very dusty environments a sealant will attract and hold dirt leas than a wax

100% agree with Jim about skipping Nubas when dusty. IME FK425 has tremendous anti-sstatic properties which may cut down on the dust build up. Jim is a huge DoDo wash fan so I understand his affinity for thee wash buckets!

Thank you all. I will clay, seal and then skip the wax. It's dusty year round here even in the garage. It can rain steady for 24 hours or more, and it doesn't seem to reduce the amount of dust fallout one bit. I have ordered FK 425 and hope frequent wipe downs will help reduce dust bonding.

Yes, I'm east and slightly south of Hanford,(Walla Walla) but fortunately our dust isn't radioactive. Yet. We have lots of farming around here and the wind blows dust and sand from the semi-arid desert to our west.

I grew up in that area. I know exactly what you are talking about. When I go home to visit family I can grow wheat on my hood. On one of my visits, I had a nice layer of dust on the car and a deer urinated on it. Clay would not remove it.
