I was just wondering if the Rupes 75e was to powerful to sand? My paint on my 99 explorer is pretty beat up. I had some clear coat failing on the roof so I decided to try my hand at sanding. Needless to say I sanded to the primer.

I used my 75e with a meguiars 3 in sanding backing pad and used a meguiars 3 in 1000 grit finish sanding disc followed by 3000 grit finishing sanding disc. I had it on speed 2, and used a spray bottle to keep it damp. Made 2 passes with each grit.

Did it just go thru because of the already failing clear coat or is it because the Rupes is to powerful for sanding?

I'm not worried about sanding thru. It's my testing and practice car.

IMO the failing paint was a large factor in blowing through the paint so quickly. The 1,000 grit may have been overkill. I have used both my 21 and LHR75e with 3000 grit with no problems so far. Get yourself a discarded panel from your local body shop for practicing.
