So I broke in my new Rupes21 that I ordered from AG yesterday. For about the first 5 minutes of use there was a loud metal rattling sound. It went away afterwards and never came back..

Any idea what it could be? :buffing:

Did you do the washer mod?

The backing plate needs to "fit in" to the machine perfectly, then you tighten down the BP screw. If its loose or incorrectly lined up, that may be your issue

I did. I checked that right away and it was tight and properly secured.

I did notice however that the original design of the backing plate has metal where the flat part of the circle sits. After the washer mod the metal part is covered by the washer. Anyone else notice this?

Can you post an audio video? Without listening it's hard to say for sure :Picture:

I had initial concerns when I first ran mine. When I listened to the "gears in motion" I thought this is either AWESOME or NASA we have problems
The noise has stayed consistent though. This machine is such a pleasure to operate compared to a traditional (Made in China) DA and will cut your working time almost in half

Having said all that, just continue using it unless you notice the machine performing funny (out of balace) or if the noise continues to get worse

Shouldn't be a problem though as long as you tighten the bolt down. I notice the factory bolt that hold the backing plate is on their really tight. So when you re-install the bolt, make sure you also tighten really tight.

I tend to remove the hex head wrench and place it in a drawer instead of leaving it in the slot where it's held from the factory.

Not sure what else could be making the noise but you say it's gone now?

:dunno:

The noise only appeared when I first turned the machine on for the very first time. It was a loud metal clanking noise for the first 5 minutes. I panicked and took the pad off and tightened the backing plate because I figured that might be the case. It was tight though.. It went away after a few minutes and never appeared again.

I decided to exclusively use the Rupes21 yesterday on a correction job just to see if the noise would appear again and it did not.

Seems to be fine. Maybe it was some of the parts breaking in? I do hope nothing is loose internally.
