my 2006 ford f150 has some rust on it from what looks like a magnet was once on the roof.now some light rust on the area and wondered what steps i could do to get this fixed instead of body shop repair. polishig it would do, but like mike said, have to do it every week. would i have to prep the area and mask surrounding area of roof and spot paint it and let cure and buff it it out. it looks about a 2 in. circle mabe cople of areas.
any suggesions.

It depends on the rust. If it just sits on top of your paint, then you can easily buff this off, like you said, from a magnet, it could have easily transferred and embedded the rust to the paint. If the rust has eaten through your paint, you can not remove it without damaging the paint. In that case i would suggest:
1 - removing the rust physically, then,
2 - using a chemical to neutralize and kill the rust and oxidation process,
3 - wash and clean with soap and water
4 - sand then clean the area with a grease remover
5 - spray some etch primer (rust-protection) on the bare metal
6 - If needed a 2k primer on top for paint adhesion
7 - sand the primer
8 - spray on your paint.

I would never leave rust to do damage. The benefit will definitely outweigh the cost of having it fixed.

Could you clay it? If not you could try a paint decontamination system.
