It was my understanding that anytime you made physical contact with the paint, you had the potential to create microabrasions. And there are certain tricks you can do to minimize them, like a foam cannon and a microfiber mitt. All that being said, I think they are almost unavoidable. You have dirt on your car (abrasive) and you gotta get it off somehow.
Please enlighten me. Where am I right? Where am I wrong?
 
You are right. Many Geeks use pressure washers to remove as much dirt as possible. Then, spray a good quality soap to lubricate the paint. Then, use the 2 bucket method wash(with Grit Guards) to remove the remainder of the dirt. Lubrication and flowing water help remove dirt from the cars paint, but there will always be contaminants that mar the surface. You just have to do your best to minimize wash induced marring.
