I just got back from dumpster diving at the body shop. I know the claims adjuster there fairly well, as everyone in our family uses this shop. Awhile ago I called him up to see if they could give me spare parts to practice on and he said to stop on by. Well since I took the day off, I went over there. They literally just throw parts in the dumpster. I was able to grab two hoods....a gray one from a Jeep Cherokee and a black one from a Toyota (I think a Camry). Best of all....

IT WAS FREE!!!!

So don't bother with picking at a junk yard and paying for a part...hit up your local body shop as I'm sure alot of other places just throw the parts away.

Alex, now how cool is that!! Man, I wish I had a dumpster like that to go diving in! :props:

Sweet! I'm looking to get a rotary this summer, so I have been looking around at places that have junk panels laying around. Nice find. Post some pictures of your results when and if you can Alex!

It was pretty amazing how much scrap parts were in there. Some in pretty decent shape. I was almost going to go to a junk yard and pay $50 to $100 bucks for one.

Definitely hit them up Ryan! The two things I will be doing is wet sanding and intentionally burning the paint. I'll post pics when I'm done!

This is a great idea! I have 3 or 4 body shops within about 2 miles from my house.

Do it!!! I hope they let you have at it!

Burning the paint intentionally....I like it. :D

Seriously though, that's good practice to know the limit.

Indeed Ryan...I want to make sure I know what it takes. I just hope that doesn't screw up the polisher :-/

That polisher has no feelings Alex.....just you when you burn through
I'm glad you found some panels to practice on.

SHOOT run that polisher till you hit bare metal !!!! Ha ha

Have some fun buddy!

Here in TN there is a place called pull-a-part I can get a used hood for about 38 dollars, I never thought about a body shop.

Rasky had an article on another site about creating a testing unit that is very interesting maybe he can post it here as well
