As I mentioned the other day i found an 1 1/2 scratch top of my fender. My fingernail barely catches. I'm debating using 2k grit very lightly just to see if I can make a difference. Is there a way to figure out if it's too deep to bother with it

If it is factory paint, it is probably too deep to safely remove completely. A paint thickness gauge is the only way I know of to proceed with confidence. As you probably know, most OEM clear is 1.5-2 mil new. An accepted standard rate of removal is .5 mil for most of us. If a gauge is not an option at this time, you may just have to proceed and consider settling for improvement rather than total removal. Me personally, I would take it down a little with aprox 3k grit, then polish it back to glossy. I do think its worth bothering with myself. Good luck, Nathan

I agree with Dave's below posting:
They don't have to stop your fingernail,
if it just goes "Click" as you run your
nail across it then it may be too deep
to compound out.
As a follow up...IMO:
If it's too deep to compound-out...
It may be too deep to sand-out.

I don't recommend "sanding" OEM CC.
I wouldn't chance it!

Instead:
I'd try the below MP-method...to at
least
round-over the scratch's edges:

Scratch Removed using Ultimate Compound
