So my beloved car got some pretty good scratches. How? Now im not going to blame it on the usual excuses people make such as:
1. The wife was driving it and did it.
2. "Someone" scratched it, or someone hit it.
3. My foot slipped off the clutch
No sirs, I put the car in reverse, let go of the clutch and started to back out BEFORE the stupid garage door opened and BAM!!! I slammed rear first into my garage door, it bent it pretty darn good and two rollers came off the rails. I wish I had taken a pic of the garage door damage, but I had more bigger concerns.....MY CAR
I dont know what the heck I was thinking backing out without the door fully opening. Ive NEVER done this before and I am such an idiot for doing this. I imagined the worse, taillights smashed or a huge bend/dent on my trunk. It sounded pretty hard considering I wasn't backing up that fast.
The damage.....
So heres the damage. The bottom edge of the garage caught my trunk pretty good. The door wasn't even half way open when I started backing out according to my wife (she witnessed the whole thing). I still cant believe It didn't do any more damage. Still, the scratches were heart breaking. I ran my fingernail through them, none caught but I could definitely feel them. Ive not yet corrected my rear end as you can see some swirls as well on the left.
Here you can see another shot. There is some nasty scratches on the right.
What to do what to do? From my experience, this was not going to be cleaned up alone with my trusted M205. At this point Im freaking out, my mind is wanting to get a Maroon pad with some 105 and get cracking :buffing:
I decide to relax, take a step back and handle this in the morning to clear my head, and fix my garage door
. On scratches like these, I like to test the waters with some Meguiar's Swirl X. I believe its a good measurement product as its abrasive level is in between 105 and 205. I put on some Swirl X by hand. It definitely improved the scratches. From the results of this, I figured the best way to tackle this was to do the following process:
1. Wash
2. Clay
3. Meguiar's Ultimate Compound by DA with Black LC Pad.
4. Meguiar's Ultimate Polish by DA with Black LC Pad.
5. Mothers Brazilian Carnuba
Why mothers? Well I have other higher quality LSP's, and mothers cleaner wax works great for what it is, smells great and It was new on my shelf so I decided to use it.
This shot is after compounding with UC. You can see I highlighted two spots. On the far left there is a few light scratches that are hard to see up close. On the left there is one RID that still remains. This was about 3 passes with the DA.
And heres the final result after doing 3 passes with UP on speed 5, then topped off with Mothers Brazilian Cleaner wax as an LSP.
Your probably wondering why a Black LC pad? Well the car is a 2005 Honda Accord V6 6speed. Its paint is VERY soft. I think many people that are inexperienced and encounter isolated problems on their paint such as this, tend to go TOO aggressive right away and end up making the problem worse than it was to begin with. I plan on going over the same area with a yellow Megs pad down the road when I fully correct my other panels. This is not a show car. I think too many people try too hard to make their daily drivers into show cars and end up making the paint look worse by going overly aggressive. I would say its 80% corrected. I might be able to bring that up to 90% with a yellow megs pad, and even as it stands, the slight scratches that remain are barely visible at an angle. Good enough for me :xyxthumbs:
Also while doing this project, I opened up my AG order and tested out ONRWW & Pinnacle Black Onyx.
This is my first "rinseless" car wash. All I can say is WOW. At first I couldn't believe how 1 oz was going to treat 2 gallons of water, and I was about to wash my car with this stuff. Im used to washing my car the old fashioned way with soapy water. This however, just looked like hazy water and smelled like yummy BUBBLEGUM
I was amazed at how it cleaned my panels so effectively with little pressure on my mitt. I am sold.
The great Bobby G reviewed this product earlier and by his review, convinced me to get some. It smells like yummy MANGO mmmmmm so good. It left my tires with a nice black finish which resembled new tires off the rack. I hate that greasy and over gloss look a lot of OTC products tend to have.
The results..
Moral of the story guys, don't be an idiot like me and wait for your garage door to fully open before you back out!!. More importantly however, "use the least aggressive product to get the job done" - quoted by my idol Mike Phillips
